Interlude
SuPpressing his laughter, Dad
points through the door and beck-
relinqUish my spot on
the floor, (Where I'm getting
caught up on my pick-ups before
some small person appears and
distributes some more.) And I
join hint in peeking 'round the
door.
There's the bay we were cer-
tain had dropped off to sleep --
slyly grinning .through face -cream
that's half an inch deep over
hair, over ears, over sweater and
feet ---over crib, over teddy -bear,
blanket and sheet. Wherever
look, there is more.
There's soap for the imp with
the goo in his hair. There's a
scrub for the rest of the spat-
tered -up lair. But what for the
glances exchanged by the pair ---
the boy in the crib and his Dad
chuckling there? ----For the silent
kin -mirth that they store?
