Mrs. Rether's home was in Transylvania, a smaU province between Hungary and Roumania in the. late 1990's and members Of her family still live there, her father being an importer. She told of the hardships she encountered as a child. in 1916 when she and her family were forced to flee from 'their homesduring the masa destruction andconfisrcation of the possessions of the wealthy, Conditions were worse during World War II and only by re- ceiving letters in several differ- ent languages, often with parts of them deleted, did she learn of the cruelties that were suffered by her people, Mrs. Rether's brother and a sister were taken from their of- fice and home and placed in con- centration camps and have not been heard from since.
