New Trade Agreement...
Washington — The United

tion to negotiate" a trade agreement.

Attempt to Destroy Incline Railway
Hamilton — Attempt was made to.
dynamite .the James Street incline
railway and send a twenty-ton car,
anchored at the top, flying down a
steep 500 feet of rail on a mission of
destruction and possible' death. Glass
was blown out,, boards torn away and
West Mountain homes for a distance
of several blocks were rocked, when
the terrific blast occurred. Stick's of
the explosive had been placed be
tween the car and the platform. The
trolley was shifted six inches, but
three lines of cable held and. prevent
ed a terrific plunge.

San Pedro, Cal. — Thirty-five fight
ing ships scanned the sea while 284

of 60,000 square miles off the coast
for eight naval fliers lost at sea. The
accident occurred when one of the
United States Navy’s long-range pat
rol bombing planes vanished.
Alberta Challenges Dominion

Ottawa — In factums filed before
the Supreme Court of Canada, the
Alberta Government challenges the
right of the Dominion Parliament to
interfere, with Provincial legislation,
and in retort, the Dominion Govern
ment challenges the legal right of the
Province to launch a Social Crdeit
system, and brands Social Credit an
“illegal scheme.” .

Montreat — Mayor Adhemar Ray-
nault said construction would be
started shortly of a $5,000,000 civic
centre on the midtown site originally
developed for a giant. Canadian Na

Armament Expenditures
Will Increase
Ottawa — Canada’s armament ex
penditures are likely to increase year
by year for a good many years to
come, and in this matter the Domin
ion Government might be willing to
co-operate with the United States on
the .matter of coastal defenses if ap
proaches were made by Washington,
it was intimated here from sources
close to the Federal Administration.
The U.S. plans for a billion dollar
coastal defense plan this year.
Jurist Passes
' Vancouver — The Ontario Supreme
Court lost a prominent figure when
Mr. Justice A, C. Kingstone, 62, died
a few minutes after suffering a heart
attack in his hotel room here. In ap
parent good health’’ Mr. Justice King-
stone, and his wife canie here for a
holiday, They visited their son,
Stewart, a Vancouver resident.

Graham, Kincardine butcher, received
painful burns to 'his face and hands
when flames §hot from the open fur-
nace door.
Rabbit Hunt
Under the leadership of Dr, Kirk
and Chas. Holtzman, about eighteen
<of the sharp shooters of town staged
a rabbit hunt' in Elma township re
cently. The rabbits were plentiful and
the hunters brought 41 jacks home
with them. The rabbits averaged
about 11 lbs. in weight. — Listowel

100 Lbs, of Honey Taken
from Wallace School
A regular, or should we say irreg
ular “bee” - was held at S.S. No. 9,
Wallace a few days ago. It had been
noticed for some time that bees were
swarming in and around the school
building and they caused considerable
nuisance by buzzing about the heads
of the pupils on warm summer days.
Several puny, attempts were made to
rid the building of the unwanted
Quests, but all to no avail. Finally W.
C. Speers, local apiarist, was called in
to consultation, and with the aid of
Mr. Wm. Gregory, he removed a big
section of the plaster on the walls
and removed the insects. The gentle
men were rewarded for their efforts
with about one hundred pounds of
honey.—Palmerston Observer.
Hold-Up Mystery Cleared Up
Lome Matthews, truck driver for
the Fordwich Creamery, was sentenc
ed to thirty days in Magistrate F.
Watt’s court in Guelph. Some weeks
ago Mr. Matthews reported to Palm
erston police that he had been robbed
by two thugs at Mr. Win. Morley’s
gate, just at the outskirts of the
town. Matthews claimed that the
men had hit him over the head and
relieved him of his employer’s mon
ey. By piecing the available evidence
together, police arrived at the con
clusion that the man had spent con
siderable of his employer’s money
and faked the hold-up to clear him
self. When confronted again and
questioned by police, Matthews con
fessed that the supposition was the
truth.—Palmerston Observer. .
House Burned
While he was in Goderich deliver-,
ing a load of hay, the farm home of
Lome Thurlow, seven miles north of
Goderich, on the Blue .Water High
way, took fire and burned to the
ground. .Most of the contents of the
lower floor were saved, but those of
the upstairs are a complete loss,
fire started when the stovepipes
lapsed.
Little Lad Scalded
Two-year-old Andrew Miller
son of Andrew Miller, R. R. 2, Cred-
iton,1 was taken late Sunday night
from his home to St. Joseph’s Hos
pital, London, with severe scalds
about the back. The child is reported
to have fallen into a tub of hot water.
His injury, although painful, was not
believed to be immediately serious,
hospital authorities reported.—Exeter

Arnold Turnbull, son of Mrs.
Turnbull, Seaforth, who for a
ber of years has been secretary for
Great Britain of the Imperial Life As
surance Company, with headquarters
in London, England, had the honor
recently of being presented to Pier
Majesty Queen Mary. Mr. Turnbull
is Canadian representative in London
House and Queen Mary’s visit was on
the occasion of the opening of a new

Mrs, Daniel Geddes Died
At Mount Forest
The remains of Mrs. Daniel Ged,
des, highly-respected resident of
Lucknow who died in Mt, Forest,
were laid to rest in Greenwood Cem
etery Friday afternoon, There was a
service at the Presbyterian church of
winch Mrs. Geddes was a beloved
member, She was in her 69th year.
Prior to her marriage to the late Dr.
Geddes, whose death occurred a little
over three years ago, she was Maud-
ena Cameron. With the passing of
Mrs, Gedde j only one slgte? remains,

Appeal Prison Terms
On the ground that their five-year
penitentiary sentences are excessive,
Lewis Wakefield, of Moorefield, and
William Fester, of Galt, have entered
an appeal in the Supreme Court of
Ontario, The 21-year-old prisoners,
in Huron County jail, Coderjch, were
sentenced by Magistrate J. AT Mak
ins in December after they had plead
ed guilty to more than 30 different
charges of breaking and entering in
five counties of Western Ontario.
Committed for Trial
On charges of attempting suicide
and of breaking and entering, Thom
as Curtin, single Seaforth laborer,
was committed for trial in Magistrate
J, A. Makins’ court at Seaforth after
a brief preliminary hearing. To a
third charge, that of being intoxicat
ed, Curtin pleaded guilty and was fin
ed $10 and costs or 10 days in jail.
He chose the latter alternative. He
pleaded not guilty to the other
charges,
