Gregg, Mr. and Mrs. A. Butchart, Mrs. H. E. Ashton, Mrs. A. Ruttan, Miss Audrene Zimmerman were visitors of Mr,’ Hueston’s at his cottage at Amberley Beach on Friday last. The many friends of (Mr.. Cecil Day will be glad to learn he is improving and was able to spend a few days with his mother in Gorrie last week. A coppie of weeks ago Mr. Day had his arm caught in the spreader, where he was held until Mrs. Day came to his assistance and put the machine out of gear. Several stitches were re­ quired to close the nasty cuts in hi,s arm. Born—On Wednesday, September 22nd, to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Has- tie, a son. Mr. Harry Woodcock, of Thorold, spent a day in Gorrie last week. Miss Mae Watters, Toronto, spent last week at the home of her mother. Sympathy is extended to the fam­ ily of the late Mr. John Watters’who passed away on Thursday of last week. Mrs. Victor Shera and Mrs. Wil- ford King spent Sunday, with rela­ tives and friends at Drayton, and at­ tended the Presbyterian Anniversary Services there. Mr, and Mrs. Cephas McLaughlin, (Miss Edith McLaughlin and Mr. Joe McLaughlin of Saginaw, Mich,, were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Bolton. Miss B. Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. Hen­ ry Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lambkin and two children, all of Fordwich, attended a birthday party for Clare-Bolton, at the home of his parents, Mr. and'Mrs. Ed. Bolton; Mr. R. Gi.bbs of Londesboro, was al­ so present. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. Bolton were, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Al­ brecht and Miss Florence Albrecht of Harriston, and Mr. and Mrs. John Webber, of Palmerston, Mr, Mervyn WMker returned to his home in Coldwater last Wednesday after spending a week with his par­ ents, and also his brother, Lorne and family. Mr, and Mrs. Alex. Marshall visit­ ed the latter’s • parents, Mr. and Mrs. Curie, at Belmore, on Sunday. ,Mr, Livingston, of Toronto, spent Sunday at the home of Mr, and Mrs. Thos. Short. Mr, and Mrs. Allan McTavish and son,. Gordon, of Lucknow, .also Mr. and Mrs. W. Schaefer, of Fordwich, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cole. Mrs. George Day has returned to her home in Wingham after spend­ ing some time with her brother here. (Mrs. W. G, Strong has returned from Port Credit where she was call­ ed to the bedside of her late broth­ er, George Warrell. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cole are spending a couple of days in Ford­ wich this week with their daughter, Mrs. W. Schaefer and Mr. Schaefer. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Un­ derwood on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Boyd and daughter, Wilma, *of Fordwich, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Dunlop and Mrs. Cudmore of Sea­ forth. Mrs. L. F. Ashton, Mrs. Alex. Hamilton, also Miss Hazel Hamilton spent Tuesday in Toronto. Gorrie Pupils Did Well Owing, to the epidemic of infantile paralysis it was necessary to cancel the Howick School Fair. Since this is. an outstanding school activity many children were disappointed par­ ticularly those who had prepared ex­ hibits. Art, maps and writings pre-'; pared by the pupils last June have been judged and the prizes awarded. Out of a possible forty-eight prizes pupils of the local school were suc­ cessful in winning twenty-four. Howick on Thursday, Sept. 33rd, of Frances Bennett, widow of the late John Watters. The deceased was bprn in Turnberry Township, near Belmore, 69 years ago last July. On December 17th, 1889, she was married to John Watters who prpdp- cea<2ed her eight years ago. She leav­ es to mourn her loss, four daughters, Mae of Toronto, Olive of Listowel, Bernice of Saskatoon, Sask., Hazel at home, and one son, Richard, of Fordwich, fifteen grandchildren and three brothers, Thomas of Fordwich, Richard of Conquest, Sask., and Jos­ eph, of Sacremento, Calif.' A private service was held from her late residence at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 25th, followed by public service in St. Stephen’s ^Anglican Church, conducted by the rector, Rev. A. H. O’Neil, who paid tribute to the de­ voted Christian service of the depart-, ed, in both the home and the church, particularly stressing the wonderful faith in God, which produced in her heart and soul a state of 'Christian composure. Three favorite hymns of the departed were sung “Breathe on me breath of God”, “Peace, perfect peace,” and “Nearer my God, to’ Thee.” Interment was made in the family plot in Gorrie Cemetery, the pall- bearer§ being, Messrs. John Warrell, George Galbraith, Nelson Gowdy, Norman Wade, William Young and' William Austin. The large attend­ ance at the church, regardless of the weather, as well as the many and beautiful floral- tributes, which were from the family, many relatives and friends and from friends of Miss Watters in the Hydro Electric Pow­ er Commission of Toronto, showed the great respect in which Mrs. Wat­ ters was held. Relatives were present from Con­ quest, Sask., Toronto, Stratford, Palmerston and Wingham. ; ■ 6 .. '.I?- » r Stage Improvement The new stage in the Township Hall was last week treated to a much needed coat of paint, which will add much to the- appearance of the new velour curtain, donated by the local branch of the Women’s Institute. The curtain will be in use for the first time on Saturday night when the “Happy Cousins” of Elmira will pre­ sent the program for the Agricultur­ al Society. Gregg Cele- • brated Their Golden Wedding OBITUARY Mrs. John Watters The death occurred on Thursday, At Clearview Farm,5 Gorrie, the home of their son, Carroll Gregg and his wife, the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage/of Mr. and Mrs. Wil­ liam H. Gregg was celebrated on Tuesday evening, Sept. 21st. 'After a delightful buffet dinner an informal program was carried out under the di­ rection of Mr. A.T3utchart. The toast : to the bride and groom was proposed ; by Rev. Hugh Wilson, of Auburn, i and was responded to in a happy vein ■ by the bridegroom of fifty years ago, Mrs. Hugh Wilson, a niece of Mr. Gregg, delighted the gathering with a reading, “The Old Man Goes To Town,” Mrs. Cecil Day, only dau­ ghter of Mr. and MrsvGregg, read a large number of letters conyeying congratulations and best wishes from relatives and friends in Calgary, Port Arthur, Huntsville, Toronto, Guelph, Ingersoll, Aylmer, Gorrie and other points. Many of those present added their tribute to the fine contribution which Mr. and Mrs, Gregg have made tp the community in which they have lived during most of their married life. The» gathering concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Many handsome and useful gifts were received. ' William H. Gregg and Miss Mary ; J. Evans, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Eyans were married in the old Metlwdist Church at Gorrie on Sept. 21, 1R87, by Rev. J., J. Feyguson, an uncle of the bride, . assisted by Revs. *E. A. Chown and ‘ W, Ayers. ' ■ Following their marriage they liv­ ed for four years at Springbank, be­ tween Fordwich and Lakelet, after Which they moved to Clearview farm near ^Gorrie, where they made their home ' until a few years ago when they removed to a 'home in the vill­ age. Both Mr. and iMrs. Gregg have lived in Howick Township all their lives. The union was blessed by two children, Edith Mildred, now Mrs. Cecil Day, and Carroll, who now lives on the farm on which his parents spent most of their married life. On their arrival in Gorrie Mr. and Mrs. Gregg became actively associat- e*d with the Methodist Church, Mrs. Gregg as a S.S. teacher and a mem­ ber of the Women’s Associations and Mr. Gregg in connection with the of­ ficial Board, of which lie has been a member for forty-five years. He was secretary of the Trustee Board for 30 years and for 37 years was also Sun­ day Sjchool superintendent. For many years he has been a- prominent member of the Orange Or­ der and was at one time a member of the township council, served as a pub­ lic school trustee for 6 years, and is at present vice-president of the How­ ick Mutual Fire Insurance Co. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Gregg wish they may still enjoy many years of happy wedded life. A ADVENTURES IN ECONOMY,.. School re-opened here on Monday <5f last week with a good attendance in both Public and Continuation Schools. The teaching staff this term is composed of Mr. H. Knight, con­ tinuing principal,and Miss Archibald of Seaforth, as assistant in Continua­ tion School, while Miss Gilkinson of Wingham, and Miss E. Stocks, of town, are on the Public School staff. Miss Jean Walker, of Fordwich, spent a few days last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wade. .Mr. and Mrs. Bert Cook, who have been holidaying in California, return­ ed to their home here last week. Miss Helen Milligan visited last week with friends in Clifford. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Zurbrigg and Miss Vera‘Durst, all of Ingersoll, vis­ ited at the home of the latter’s par­ ents, Mr. and Mrs. I. Durst, Thurs­ day of last week. Miss Agnes Durst left last week . for Ingersoll where she has accepted, a position. Mrs. David Breckenridge is not as well as her many friends would, wish.. We trust she will soon be enjoying better health. Mr. and Mrs. D. D.' Sanderson re­ turned last week after spending a few days in Toronto and Markdale. A.Y.P.A. Elected Officers The A.Y.P.A. of St. James Church held their opening meeting of the sea­ son on Tuesday evening of last week in the school room of the church, at which the officers £or the coming year were elected and are: President, Kathleen Durst; Vice Pres., Isobel Earls; Sec., Lily Waller; Treas., Bob Paulin. The young people are prepar­ ing to present a play in the near fut­ ure and hope to begin practicing this, week. Campbell, was unfortunate in, meeting with an accident near Or­ angeville. When turning out to pass another vehicle, the car swerved on the soft shoulders of the roadway and smashed through the guard rails near a bridge. Fortunately Dr. Camp­ bell and passenger were not seriously hurt, and were able to proceed to. Toronto after securing another car,, the doctor’s car having been badly damaged in the accident. Miss Betty Hpttfer is attending Wingham High School this term, and. her friends wish her every success. Mrs. Cross and daughter, front near Harriston, called on Mrs. Me** Dougall on Sunday, Mrs. (McDougall returning with them for a few weeks’1 visit. Mr. and Mrs. Whiteman from Bel* grave, spent Sunday with the latter’s parents, Mr, and Mrs, D. W. Rae. Dr. and Mrs. McFarland, from th<> West, are at present visiting friemls. at Ottawa.
