Mc­ Laughlin. Mrs. McLaughlin returned with them and will spend a short holi­ day at Detroit. Women’s Missionary Society The May meeting of the W.M.S. was held at the home of Mrs. B. Mar­ tin with Mrs. Stocks and Miss Lin­ ton in charge, Mrs. Stocks led in the devotional period while Miss Linton took up the third chapter of the study book “New Life in Rural Communit­ ies” (Far Horizons). Mrs. Bert Mar­ tin gave a very interesting report of the sectional meeting recently held at. Goderich. Plans were made for the annual bale. Donations of new and second-hand clothing also quilts, to be left at Mr. R. J, Rann’s store this • week. The meeting closed with the Benediction. Call was answered by a verse from the prophet Jeremiah, a very interest­ ing piece from the Durham paper was read by Mrs. Taylor, on the Induc­ tion at Durham of Rev. Maurice Farr, whose father, Rev. T. H. Farr, preach­ ed his Induction sermon which was very unusual and interesting. He was a former St. Stephens rector, and Maurice was born in Gorrie. The Scripture Lesson was read by Mrs. Foster, Jeremiah 33rd chap., verses 19 to 26, and a splendid paper which was prepared by Mrs. Chas. King on The Prophet Jeremiah, was read by Miss M. Kaine. The closing prayers were led by Rev. A. H. O’Neil, after which a dainty lunch was served by the hostess. Mr. and Mrs. David Dane, of Tor­ onto, „were holiday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Wade. Gorrie is sorry to lose two of its best citizens in the persons of Mr. and Mrs. H. Cook, who moved on Thursday last to the C.P.R, station at Wroxeter. Miss Esther Dungey and Mr. D. Laurie, who met a tragic and sudden death in Detroit May 17th, was buried in Millbank Cemetery, Thursday, May 20th. Fun­ eral services were held in the United' Church with Rev. Stevenson officiat­ ing. Miss Laurie was the daughter of Dr. Chas. A. Laurie, formerly of St. Catherines, and Eliza A. Lowrie, dau­ ghter of the late David Lowrie of Howiclc Township and Gorrie. Miss Laurie was a graduate of the Gorrie public school and Harriston High* school and had taught in Detroit schools since her graduation. She leaves her mother and brother, Ralph, A., resident in Detroit. W. A. Plan Garden Party The monthly meeting of the Gorrie Women's Association met at the home of Mrs, J. Robinson on Thursday af­ ternoon, May 20th. The meeting op­ ened with a hymn and Mrs. W. G. Strong leading in prayer. The min­ utes were- then given, business was discussed and arrangements were made for a garden party on June 23. The roll was called with a very good atte'ndance. .Mrs. W. Simpson thank­ ed the association very nicely for their kindness during Mr, Smipson's illness. Mrs. Gregg also read a letter of appreciation for help that had been sent abroad. During the afternoon the ladies spent their time piecing quilts and doing other sewing. A hymn was sung and the meeting closed by all repeating the Lord’s Prayer. Mrs. W. Gregg and Mrs. A. Toner served a nice lunch. Next meeting will be held at Mrs. W. Pyke’s home. * Mr. M. D. Irvin is attending the Embalming School at Toronto Uni­ versity this week. LIBRARY BOARD ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the How­ ick Township Library Board, Mrs. Fred Demerling, of Fordwich, was elected president for the following year; Mrs. T. Wilson was named secretary-treasurer and Dr. ■ C. C. Ramage, Vice-President. Librarian H. V. Holmes and other members of the Board were re-elected. Retiring Secretary, H. T. Wylie, gave his re­ port, showing that one purchase of new books had been made and that another purchase will be made with the balance now on hand. The purchasing committee is head­ ed this year by Mr. Ken. Ashton whose experience has aided Fordwich library along this line. The Librarians of the local libraries comprise the re­ maining members of this committee. A resolution was passed instructing libraries to return all loans of books to the central depot at Gorrie, at the close of each .three months period, ■the responsibility of this task being placed on the village representative to the board. This ruling does not de­ prive any library from reborrowing a certain book or books at a later date, which can be done, but it is hoped will prove a better means of keeping all books in freer circulation. A committee comprising Mrs. De­ merling, Dr, Ramage, Messrs. Holm­ es and Sawtell, were appointed to in­ terview the Howick Township Coun­ cil on Friday re a grant to the Town­ ship .Library, and the Council a $100.00 grant, ing the past month, left last week for his home in Smith’s Falls. Mr. George Pope returned to his home in London on Saturday after spending a week with friends here.
