The evening concert was held in the Foresters’ Hall and the hail was filled in spite of the rain and storm which starred shortly after 6 o’clock and continued most of the night. C. R. Coultes acted as chairman and in­ troduced a splendid program, consist­ ing of the following numbers: Opening number by the Orchestra. Vocal solo by Doris Scott. Margaret Coulter gave a reading and this was followed by a selection by the mouth organ band. The music competition was held at this time with four contestants. Wade, Nora ’VanCamp, Mrs. N. Geddes and Freda ; Jordan. An instrumental selection by Floyd Thompscn and Louise Martin and a Solo by Wrn. Spiers were also enjoy­ ed. Jas. McGill gave the decision for the music contest as follows; Dofbthy Wade, Mabel Coultes, Bernice Ander- . son, Floyd Thompson. The T. Eaton Trophy was won by Mabel Coultes but as she won it last ' year it reverted to Charlie Procter and the second Eaton prize went to Mabel Coultes, and Ross Procter took the 3rd Eaton prize. These three ' prizes, the Bank of Commerce Silver ; Tray and the Entrance prizes, were presented to the winners at this time by a group of junior girls. The sing­ ing of the National Anthem closed a ■ very successful School Fair. Mabel Coultes and Lois McGuire are eligible to compete in the County ■ Spelling Match and Mabel will also ; eompets in the Public Speaking coh- The u eather was ideal for the sev­ enteenth annual School Fair held at ] St, Helens on Tuesday last week. The fair got away to a splendid start about 2 o’clock, when the six schools formed Hues at the corner and with banners streaming and led by< Piper Wilfred McQuillin. Inspector j Beacom and Mr. Ian McLeod, Agri- j cultural Representative, marched to < Miller’s Orchard. Here in massed | formation, the Strathcona exercises | were creditably done by all the pu­ pils, with the commands being given , by Inspector E. C. Beacom, ' Here too, later, the weed naming, j spelling and mental arithmetic com- i petitions were keenly contested and i the other contests and live stock judging were watched with interest. In the adjoining church shed the exhibits were on display with large entries particularly in Jlotyers and some vegetables. The schools participating in the fair with their teachers were as follows: No. 8, Dungannon, Mr. Graham Pinkney and Miss Olive Farrier; No. 13, Belfast, Mr. Watson Davis; No. -3, Miss Margaret Mason; No. 4, St. Helens, Miss Sadie McCharles, Miss Beatrice McQuillin; No. 12, Fordyce, Miss Lauretta McBurney; No. 14, Miss R. Jean Logan. Mr. Ian McLeod, his secretary, Miss Bessie Watt and Mr. McKer- cher, were assisted in the judging by Mr, Kenneth Cameron on the fruit; Mr. Wilson Woods, B.S.A., on poul­ try, and Mrs. Wellington Henderson of Lucknow in the domestic science. In the evening the fair was brought to a close when the public speaking recitation and musical contests were held in the church shed. Rev. H. M. Wright was chairman for this inter­ esting program, which was intersper­ sed with musical numbers from the various school sections. Inspector E. C. Beac.mr, ILA., and Gurdon S. Mc­ Intyre, B.A., of Lucknow, were judg­ es for the competitions. The chairman’s remarks were fol- lowed by a selection otV the bag pipes by Wilfred McQuillin after which In­ spector Beacom gave a short address. This was followed by the recitation competition, with Billy Stewart win­ ning first place with “‘Tain’t nothing to laugh at.” Jean Wellwood, who chose as her subject "King Edward VIII”, led in the public speaking con­ test, while Clifford Farrier with his violin, won first place in the instru­ mental solo contest. Other numbers on the program were solos by Miss Claire Pentland, by Miss Mary Foran, • by Mr. Bert. Cullimore and by Mr.' Cliffe Hogan; a dance by Dorothy Webb; a reading by Mrs. E. Morgan, a vocal duet by Misses Lois and Wil­ ma Treleaven; a piano solo by Miss Blanche McDougall and musical sel­ ections by the “Jolly Time Literary ’ Society.” To Inspector Beacom was accorded the honor of presenting the T. Eaton Co. prizes. Caroline Humphrey of S. S. No. 13, was proclaimed winner of the handsome silver centre entree dish with a score of 54 points.
