The president then took charge. The minutes of the last two meetings were read and approved and the roll call was answered by a thought on victory and triumph. It was decided that the girls would hold an afternoon tea in the basement of the church on Oct. 21. One verse of “Breathe on me, breath of God” and the Mizpah Benediction closed the meeting. WOMAN’S AUXILIARY RESUMED MEETINGS Mrs. O’Neil Gave Paper on “Prayer” On Thursday afternoon last the Women’s Auxiliary of St. Stephen's Church resumed their meetings after a lapse of over two months, and a good attendance met at the home of Mrs. John Dinsmore, when the ladies spent the afternoon in piecing a quilt. Mrs. Holmes presided and opened the meeting with prayer, after which the roll call was responded to by a Scripture verse with the word “Com­ forter”. Mrs. O'Neil gave a splendid paper on “Prayer" which is one of the most essential phases of the Christian life. Mrs. N. Wade read the Scripture lesson, St. John 14: 16-31 (Jesus’ promise to send a comforter). The President then closed with the prayers, in which all joined in the members* prayer. During a lovely lunch served by the hostess, business matters were discussed. ........ WOMEN’S ASSOC. Black on Mon­ day evening of last week with thir­ teen members and two viistors pres­ ent. Mrs. L. F. Ashton, as convenor of the programme committee, took charge of the meeting which opened with a quiet reading of the theme by Mrs. Ashton, followed by reading in unison hymn “Holy Spirit, truth di­ vine”. Hymn “Awake our souls, away our fears” after which Mrs. Fydell led in prayer. The Scripture reading was taken by three of the members, Miss Douglas, Mrs, A. Edgar and Mrs. K. Hueston, Mrs. Shera read a devotional paper on The Spirit of Christ. Parts of letters from mission­ aries were read by Mrs. E, Carson, followed by articles on keeping the work of the auxiliary out of a rut, at family London visitors recently, Mrs. Timm and boys and Mrs. Stocks remaining to spend a few days with friends there. The many friends of Miss Margaret Linton will be glad to know she was able to return home on Monday of last week after spending several weeks in the hospital at London. Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Bcrkinshaw and son, Bobbie, were week-end visitors with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kitchen. Miss Elva Stocks has returned to London where she has been success­ ful in obtaining a few weeks’ teach­ ing. Rev. A. and Mrs. Leggett, of Gor­ rie, visited on Tuesday of last week with Mrs. Robt. McLaughlin. Mrs, Allan Munro, who recently un­ derwent an operation in General Hos­ pital, Hamilton, was able to return home on, Thursday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Spoke on Bible Society ’ The evening service on Sunday last at United Church was of special in­ terest when the pastor, Rev. A. M. Grant spoke on The Great Work of the Bible Society and his talk was illustrated by slides. The growth of the New Testament was shown as well as some of the earliest Grecian manuscripts. The Life of Mary Jones proved to be of great interest also. Sunday School Officers Meeting A meeting of the Officers and Tea­ chers of the United. Church Sunday School will be held at the Manse on Thursday evening, to make plans for the coming year’s work. Miss Mary Harris visited last week, with friends at Wingham. Mrs. L.
