(The following column by
McKenzie Porter appeared in
the Toronto Sun Several mon-
ths ago, and was brought to
our attention by a local reader.
Although not all Mr. Porter's
remarks may apply to Clinton,
he does have several very
salicint points.)
The town of Fergus, Ont.
(pop: 5445),..has one of the
finest 19th-century streets in
North America. Stone masonry
of the early and middle Vic-
torian periods follows architec-
tural lines derived from the
elegant regency style. But
already, some of the old
buildings have been botched by
'modern fronts, or faodes of
glass and plastic, slapped on
stores, offices and restaurants
in rectangular shapes and
gaudy colors.
Old small towns everywhere
are rapidly losing their charac-
ter to cheap and nasty
renovations of alarming unifor-
mity. Our streetscapes are to
become not merely hideous, but
identical from_ sea to sea. One
reason lies in the axiom that
nothing must interfere with
business. Many municipal
politicians are human bullocks,
impotent in both business and
art, who survive only by being
servile and to local
businessmen. Our old streets
are dismantled .and mutilated
because planning is in the
hands of these artistic
eunuchs.
Even more contemptible,
however, are the architects,
who at least have been eq)osed
during their schooling to the
beauties of buildings. When the

"What should we ever do, Santa has the measles," was the
question asked during a skit portrayed by the grade three
class at Clinton Public School recently at their Christmas con-
cert. 'Directed by Miss Johnson and Mrs. Shaddick, the skit
was well presented and in fact Santa recovered before the end '
of it and will make his real appearance in town tonight. (News-
