During the period April 1973 through March 1974 the Ministry's Road and Motor Vehicle Traffic Safety Branch conducted 724 vehicle and component tests, including 50 passenger cars, 27 snowmobiles and more than two thousand vehicle components, For the purpose of the testing, new vehicles are pur- chased from dealers and represent typical products available to' Canadian pur- chasers. All passenger cars tested complied with emission safety standards but initial marginal results on 20 cars indicate that improvements were required in manufacturer's engine tuning procedures and dealer servicing instructions. The current emission testing program which commenced in April 1974 has demonstrated significant improvements in Christmas in Guyana BY INDRANI SINGH CONESTOGA JOURNALISM STUDENT Five years ago everybody started buying their Christmas gifts, etc. from mid November. Starting early December blinking Christmas lights went on and decorated synthetic pine trees were set up in various houses owned by people of Christian, Moslem, Hindu and other religions. Everybody celebrated Christ- mas, it was a time to make more money, have a few days off to drink, eat lavish food, munch on B.C. apples (they're banned now) and grapes. It was a time to eat walnuts and almond nuts and party as much as you wanted and not feel guilty about the extravagance of it all, even though for the first few weeks after Christmas one had to tighten their belt to make up for that previous ex- travagance. Stores were open later than usual and finally on Christmas Eve night they looked like human jungles. Prices were supposedly lower with the original and cut prices in red and white or black and white. Teenagers congregated out- side of the biggest and most ex- pensive store, talking, laughing, smoking and occasionally strolling over to the hotel obliquely away, for a few drinks. After the stores were closed young and old began celebrating Enmities were forgotten, people were happy greeting each other with "Merry Christmas". • Christmas Day was spent at home, families got together for the day to drink and eat a variety of foods ranging from baked turkey to chicken curry. Streets were practically empty except for those who holiday or no holiday plod on to different destinations, or ply the streets for their daily bread. People visited their friends on Boxing Day to have a few drinks and then be on their way to other friends. Some made their way downtown window shopping and to admire the decorated streets with lighted trees, Not to be forgotten were the muggers who seemed to be everywhere and knew that people walked around with more money than usual. Suddenly Christm'as was over and it was time for the breadwinners to return to their various jobs but also preparations were started for New Year's eve. Dressmakers were swamped with orders and material for stylish gowns, hairstylists were booked heavily. On New Year's eve couples, dressed in their fineries made their way to dance halls, clubs, hotels and homes to celebrate and drink their way to mid- night when everybody went wild kissing each other and shouting "Happy New Year", Parties gained momentum and continued until daybreak and some way past that. New Year's day was spent quietly with a little drinking, here and there, Celebrations were over. It was a new year - but the next day life continued as usual, Today, cost of living has risen over 200 percent, unem- ployment is high and not many people celebrate the Christmas holidays like yesteryear, Results ToHuTtY' DEIEI:m74.enth vehide testing now ieleased engine tuning. Also, variations in tests results indicate in many cases the need for manufacturers to improve vehicle design objec- tives and manufacturing quality control procedures and testing in order to ensure continuing compliance of production vehicles with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety standards. Although all original equip-. ment tires tested met the safety standards, several samples of replacement tires did not meet the federal new tire standards and dimension requirements. Results also indicate that fuel tank assembly and wind- shield retention quality control will have to be improved if standards are to be main- tained, Mr, Marchand em- phasized that manufacturers must be more diligent in these areas to .ensure safety and ex- pressed surprise at these marginal results. Other areas of concern are incorrect use of combined lamps and reflectors in specialized vehicles and inadequate reflectivity; also noise levels on several types of, snowmobiles. As a result of the compliance testing, -inspection programs and improved quality control procedures of the companies, 45,163 vehicles were modified to bring them into.compliance with ti standards.
