-Conservation Authority may close
vandal prone Lucan park
A sharp increase in van-
dalism may close the Lucan
Conservation Area, the
Ausable-Bayfield Conservation
Authority, was told last Wed-
nesday in Exeter.
Resource manager Roger
Martin said at the year-end
meeting that "severe and
malicious damage" has oc-
curred in the eight; acre conser-
vation area.
He said vandals also
damaged small cabins on the
property of a neighboring land
owner.
Damage at the 15-year-old
conservation area to which the
public has free access included
attempts to burn privies,
destruction of small trees and
the removal of expensive hand-
routed signs, he said.
"We're going to have to do
something soon or we may be
sfoaricrl to close the park," he
Mr. Martin said vandalism
at the park was far worse than
at the authority's nine other
conservation areas.
A similar threat to close the
area about five years ago
--because of increasing van-°
dalism prochice0; aietition and
„ „strorig Aesidert,prOtesta deman-.
ding the area remain open, he
said.
"For some reason," he said,
"vandalism at the Lucan park
dropped right off."
But, he added, unless steps
can be taken to curb the recent
outbreak of vandalism the area
might be closed.
One step, he suggested, is the
erection of more gates to bar
public access to certain parts of
the park,
The authority also was told a
six-acre site has been acquired
along the Ausable River, east
of Crediton for a new day-ase
conservation area.
The park, expected to cost
about $9,000, combined with a
new 550-acre site acquired
beside the Parkhill Conser-
vation Area, will bring to 2,400
acres the amount of land
owned by the authority and
developed as conservation
areas,
The authority owns an ad-
ditional 4,400 acres of forest
land which has• been managed
by the Ontario ministry of
natural resources.
Plans for the Crediton site
located at the junction of the
Ausable River and Huron'
County Road 4, will be
developed by authority staff in
1975, land acquisition commit-
tee chairman John Stephen of
Blanshard Township said.
Authority members,
representing 32 municipalities
in Perth, Huron, Middlesex
and Lambton counties, were
also given a first look at a
proposed 1975 budget.
Secretary-treasurer Lila
Hume said expenditures of
abopt $600,000 are estimated
1141 tiii\about $125,000 from.the
19/4 budget.
Major expenses would in-
chide $431,000 for capital ex-
penses, $126,000 for ad-
ministration and $45,000 for
maintenance costs.
Mrs. Hume said the budget
will be ready for approval at
the authority's annual meeting
Feb. 7.
