Try growing
hyacinths on rocks
If you like to grow flowers
bat are short of time or unlucky
in the garden, "hyacinths on
the rocks" may be for you.
They produce beautiful, scen-
ted flowers indoors with little
care and the bulbs may be
planted outside afterwards.
"Select a vase or bowl that
will hold at least two to three
inches of small pebbles," ad-
vises J. K. Hughes, Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food horticulturist. Place
hyacinth bulbs on the pebbles
and add more until the bottom
third of each of the bulbs is em-
bedded in gravel.
Add water to the bowl. or
vase until it just reaches the
bottom of the bulbs. Rot will
set in if the water rises above
the base of the bulbs, but the
pebbles should be kept damp at
all times so that the hyacinths
will flower.
Set the container in a cool,
dark place, and move it to a
sunny location when the shoots
on the bulbs are three to four
inches long. Blooms should
open in a few days and should
last two weeks if kept cool.
After the flowers die, cut
them from the bulbs but do not
disturb the leaves. Tie these
together with a string when
they become floppy and let
them yellow and dry up. When
they have deteriorated, store
the bulbs in a dry, dark, cool
place until the next fall. Plant
them in a garden enriched with
manure and fertilizer.
Although it may take two year8
for the bulbs to renew their
strength, they will eventually
bloom in the garden.
