Roy Jewell was born in Dunwich Township, Elgin
County and received his education at the Dutton
Public and High Schools, In 1946, he was appointed
field• man, Middlesex Federation of Agriculture,
assisting in the organization of the Middlesex Co-
operative Medical Services and becoming its first
secretary.
Roy started a regular farm broadcast on CFPL,
Radio in June, 1946 and in October, 1948 he accep-
ted the full-time position of Director of Farm Ser-
vices, London Free Press and CFPL-Radio. When
CFPL-TV began to broadcast in 1953, Roy began
"THE ROY JEWELL FARM SHOW" — the first
regularly scheduled television farm program in-
Canada. In 1971, he received an award from the
NAFB in recognition of 25 years of outstanding ser-
vice to agriculture through farm broadcasting.
Roy is past-president, West Elgin Agricultural
Society; past-president Dutton and Dunwich Cham-
ber of Commerce; past-member, Board of Stewards,
St. John's United Church, Dutton; past-director,
Quality Swine Improvement Association of Western
Ontario and has contributed to CBC farm depart-
ment radio and TV programs.
In April, 1973 he was made an honorary member
of the Ontario Institute of Professional Agrologists,
an award that is not given without careful
screening.
During his career, Roy has become a world
traveller conducting farm study tours to many coun-
tries. He has been twice to Australia, New Zealand,
Hong Kong, Japan, Holland, Denmark and Sweden
— once to Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, South
Africa, Rhodesia, Belgium, West Germany, Swit-
zerland, France, England and Scotland. In North
America, his travels have taken him to the Yukon
and Alaska,
Roy is president of Jewell Farms Ltd. and lives
on a 225-acre farm in Elgin County. A busy man, he
still finds time to speak at rural functions
throughout the area.
