THURSDAY, OVIVIAR 1, 19 PACE 11: New director busy Ted Thurston is the first one to admit it, As Vanastra's new, and first Recreation director, he has his hands full and a jot of work ahead of him, The six foot one inch, 27, year, old St, Catharines Ontario native says he is looking for, ward to the problems, and will meet every one as, a challenge when they come op. Like reit Monday night when a small electrical fire broke out in a light fixture in the former Clinton armed forces Curling Club that is being renovated and being turned into a posh curling club. The fire caused little damage, as the Brucefield Fire Department had it out in a few minutes, but it's just one of the many problems that come with fixing up a building that has been idle and unheated for more than two years. Ted was hired. last month by the fledgling Vanastra Recreation Committee. He comes here from Copper Cliff Ontario, where he was a con- / sultant with the sports and recreation bureau of the ministry of community and social services. There he assisted local recreational associations and personnel and helped set up recreational programs. A graduate of the University of Guelph where he received a Diploma in recreation, Mr. Thurston also worked for three years as program director at the Niagata Falls YMCA, and for two years previous to that, he was the assistant community centre director at Westrnount. Secondary School in Hamilton. Married and the father of one child, Mr, Thurston has his hanag run -fit the present time getting the curling club running smoothly again. A meeting was scheduled on Wednesday night for area curlers 1who are interested in getting the four sheets operational again, When he has that running satisfactorily, Mr. Thurstnii will have to turn MS' full atten. tion to the, new covered swim- ming pool being built at Vanastra. The pool, the first of its kind in Huron County, is ex- pected to be ready by January, and will offer swimmers a year- round-facility for swimming. The cost of the cover of the, pool is being raised mostly from a lottery and from govern- ment grants, The Recreation Committee hopes to stay away from the taxpayers* pockets for the entire thing. Mr. Thurston will alAs'o have to worry about the community centre, that is located in the former Protestant Chapel at Vanastra. Included in the com- plex will be a day care centre and a gymnasium. And if that's not enough to fill his day, Mr. Thurston is writing a book in his spare time on physical fitness, explaining it in layman's terms.
