Reg, Jewell of the Goderich
Trotting Association warned
council that time was of impor-
tance in this matter, He said
that Mr, Cassina would be
unable to begin to arrange race
dates until the'agreements with
the town were properly
delivered.
"Undue delay can jeopardize
his dates," said Jewell.
He dubbed the proposal "a
good thing for the town and
certainly a good thing for the
association," Mr, Jewell asked
for the town's co-operation to
put the agreements through as'
quickly as possible since Mr.
Cassina would like to "get star-
ted early in October."
Deputy-reeve Stan Profit said
he was in favour of the project,
"I personally can see nothing
but advantage to the people, to
the park, to the whole
operation," said the deputy-
reeve.
He did, however, express con-
cern for the smaller
organizations who presently
use the park as a recreational
facility (softball, soccer, track
and field etc.) He also
questioned the parking
situation which has been many
times criticised by raceway
patrons and neighboring
residents alike.
"These persons must be con-
sidered at all times," reasoned
Profit. "They must never be
given reason to think the town
is interested only in the big
green dollars."

Japanese market
Japan is anada's biggest
market for buckwheat. In 1972
Japan imported 1,200,000
bushels of the crop. The
Japanese eat buckwheat in the
form of soba (buckwheat
noodles). In Canada, buck.
wheat is not a major food
source, but in pancake mixes it
forms 40 per cent of the total
flour.

-CLINTON NEWS RgOOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1974- -PACM. 7
Harness track given nod
ting pari-mutuel harness racing
op Sundays at the local
raceway, the agreement will
come null and void.
Clause 12 further stipulates
that if within 30 days of the
signing of•the agreement of the
federal Department of
Agriculture, the Ontario Racing
Commission and the Canadian
Trotting Association do not ap-
prove and grant the company a
sufficient number of Sunday
and other racing dates for 1974
and 1975 to make "in the com-
pany's opinion the operation of
the racetrack feasible", the
agreement will be ineffective.,
The agreement proposed bet-
ween the Trotting Association
and Cassina also includes the
promise that the company will
"promote and operate the
raceway at a professional level
and to conduct all racing dates
at the raceway in a manner
reflecting credit to the
Association and the Town of
Goderich,"
The agreement further calls
for Cassina's company to pay
all the costs involved with run-
ning the raceway including
any necessary renovations or
expansion to the existing
facilities, Winterization of the
present grandstand is a
possibility and the agreement
provides that the company
would acquire written approval
of the municipality before
making any significant struc-
tural changes to the permanent
facilities of the raceway.
It was learned by council
during the discussions, that the
Goderich Trotting Association
receives 50 percent of the
profits from the food concession
at the racetrack run by Verne
and Kitty Smith. The Cassina
company also reserved this
right to this percentage of the
profits under the proposed

Goderich Town Councillors
have voted in favor of drawing
up an agreement with the
Goderich Trotting and
Agricultural Association which
will permit them to enter an
agreement with Loren James
Cassina of London who in turn
will approach the Ontario
Racing Commission for suf-
ficient race dates to make
leasing the race track in this
municipality profitable for his
company.
A copy of the proposed
agreement between Cassina
and the Goderich Trotting and
Agricultural Association was
studied by council at what was
slated to be a special ad-
ministrative committee meeting
but was really a full-fledged
council meeting although the
meeting agenda labelled it a
committee meeting,
That agreement showed that
Cassina hopes to lease the local
track for a period of two years
at a rate of $1,000 per month
payable to the Goderich Trot-
ting Association.
While the agreement
specifically mentions only nine
race dates during the months of
July and August in each of the
years 1975 and 1976, it is un-
derstood the company which
Cassina represents, still to be
incorporated, would be opting
for as many race dates as
ossible for the two year
eriod,
It is understood that Sunday
nd perhaps mid-week racing
.hrough the winter months
ith a start as early as this
onth (October) is in the plan-
ing.
Clause 11 of the agreement
tipulates that if the town of
oderich does not within 15
