Presbytery objects
to lack of aid
Witnesses to meet
CLINTON NEWS RECORD, THURSDAY, DOWSER 3, 1974,,PAGE
The members of Huron-Perth
Presbytery of the United
Church of Canada, meeting
near Goderich on Tuesday,
September 24, passed a
resolution asking the Canadian
Government "to do everything
possible to demonstrate the
concern and compassion of the
people of Canada to the people
of Honduras as they seek to
recover from their disaster".
Rev. Rae Grant, of Listowel,
in presenting the resolution
said that he was concerned that
as yet he had not heard of any
other Church or Government
aid. The resolution was sent to
the Prime Minister, and local
members of Parliament.
Presbytery also pledged to sup-
port any Government action.
In other business, members
learned that 15 people have
pre-registered for the "School
of, Theology for Laity" to be
held in Central United Church,
Stratford. Rev. Murray Aspden
of Millbank, co-ordinator of the
event, said that there was still
room for more participants.
The school, a project of the
Church's Iona College at the
University of Windsor, is to be
held Wednesday evenings from
September 25 to November 13.
It will consist of a basic lecture
course by Rev. Fred Feist of
Stratford on "The Firsts in
Jesus Life", and a choice of
three electives: a. a discussion
of the lecture with Rev. Ross
Crosby, St. Marys; b. a transac-
tional analysis lab with the
book "I'm Okay - You're
Okay" taken by Rev. Aspden;
and c. values in feature films,
with Mrs. Sue Bonsteel, Strat-
ford librarian.
The purpose of the School is
to help laity explore the
meaning of Christian life and
ministry.
The major report of the day-
long meeting was given by six
Commissioners to General
Council, held at Guelph in
August, (General Council is the
United Church's highest
Court), Harold Knisley,
Goderich, Mrs. Cora Thistle,
Stratford, and The Rev. Don
Beck, Hensel', The Rev, Don
Dees, Mitchell, The Rev, Bruce
Guy, Dashwood, and The Rev.
Fred Feist,. Stratford, attended.
Mr, Knisley gave a summary
of the highlights of Council,
and concluded with Dr, Bruce
McLeod, past Moderator,
"What a time to be in the
Church".
A land use bill, submitted by
Mrs, Cora Thistle was passed
at Council. It read: "That the
United Church, through the ap-
propriate channels, express its
concern regarding the necessity
for preserving our remaining
arable land, so that succeeding
generations may be fed,"
Church Union was discussed
at considerable length. In June
of 1975, General Council will
meet to vote on any revisions in
the "Plan of Union". From
there it then will go to
Presbyteries and local
congregations. A 66 percent
majority is needed at every
level, Huron-Perth Presbytery
will be meeting in special
session late in October to study
the "plan".

Whole families of Jehovah's
Witnesses will be travelling to
Orangeville October 5 .and 6 for
their semi-annual circuit
assembly, planned around the
theme "What Sort of persons
Ought You to Be?"
The purpose of the canyon-
tion, which is expected to at-
tract 1,600 Witnesses from 20'
congregations in this area, is to
instruct them on how to live by.
Bible principles and how to im-
press others in the community
with the hope of a bright
future.
While leaders of govern-
ments are desperately trying to
solve their problems, Jehovah's
Witnesses are confident that
the future is bright - a
