by Jabez Rands
(As part of Clinton's upcoming Centennial celebrations
next year, Jabez Rands of Clinton is writing a weekly
column on the history of the Town.)
Do you remember when the Band Stand was on the main
Street?
The old Band Stand had a very disturbing life, as it was
moved around a great many times.
It was located on the Market Square in 1910 and in 1914
it was moved to a point of land 'between King Street and
Isaac Street that is now occupied by the now closed Clinton
Cab Stand, on the north side of Frank Van Altena's Barber
Shop on King Street.
Many a good band concert was presented at this location
by the Clinton Kiltie Band and Huron's own 161 Battalion
Band. The Band Stand stayed at this location for a number
of years, possibly to about 1930.
During Clinton's Old Home Week in 1925, the Band
Stand became a very important place. Every evening at a
certain time, Mayor Fred Jackson, along with the councillors
and Old Home Week Committee members would have for-
mer Clinton residents given a royal welcome. There was
always a crowd of citizens around to help with the welcome.
When the stand was moved from its Issaac Street location,
it apparently was rebuilt into a much larger and up-to-date
stand and it came back, this time to Library Park.
During the 1940s, it was moved rom Library Park to the
Community Park where it sat in front of the grandstand.
Sometime during the 1950 s it was sold to Harold Taylor
and he moved it to his property at the corner of North and
John Streets, where 'he made it into a work shop.
During the mid-1960 s, Dr. Alex Addison bought it from
Mr. Taylor and moved it to hih farm in the Maitland block,
where it still stands today, in use as a work shdp and a tool
shed.

The rumors that we had
poison ivy in the park is over
because Elgin Thompson per-
sonally examined the whole
park and said there is none
around and while doing that,
he picked the flowers off the
burdocks to make sure there
aren't many burrs this year for
the kids to bring home on their
clothes,
As' he was going through the
park, he was very impressed
with the progress at the park
and by all the children using
the facilities.
The addition on the Com-
munity Centre is coming along.
nicely and hopefully' will be
finished very shortly. The pool
is taking its own good time too,
The wading pool should be
ready by this weekend. They
are going to put patio stone and
sod around to keep the mud out
of the pool. Hopefully, this
weekend should be it.

Survey
A survey is being taken about
a nursery and day care centre,
so maybe if we get enough an-
swers to the question and the
people are really interested,
they will probably go ahead
with the project.
More news on that in two
weeks. By then, things should
be sorted out and they will go
on from there.
-'Many things - are being
thought of and discussed so
maybe when the vacations are
over and the weather gets a lit-
tle cooler we will be able to get
a good schedule going -on for
the fall and winter months so
that we have things ,to do
rather than watch the box in
the living room all the time,
People and friends are more
fun,
Many people are going away
or are away on vacation and to
all of you I hope you have a
happy and healthy holiday. I
will be gone for the next two
weeks so collect all your news
for me and call after six on
August 5 and I'll put all the
news in then. My number is
482-9611 and don't forget
because if you don't tell me
