Farmers lose

route fight
Farmers in Huron and Bruce
Counties who have been
fighting the proposed power
corridor between Bradley Junc-
tion and Seaforth in favor of a
route that would travel
through lower class farmland
saw their cause dealt a, death
blow by Environment Minister
William Newman last week.
Mr. Newman has ordered ex-
propriation of the lands On-
tario Hydro wants for its route,
To back up his decision the
minister said that if farmers
and Hydro have not come up
with settlements within 30 days
the • Ontario Land Compen-
sation Board will be called
upon to arbitrate the matter:
The only bright point of the
decision is that the width of the
right-of-way will be reduced,
initially at least, from 900 feet
to 500 feet on the first leg of the
route and from 540 feet to 490
feet on the second, leg,, of the,.
forridOr. ,.W,ben., the, land is
needed for- a roposed expan-
,10 ,-1 mon those rights of way will be
increased to their original
figures, but until that time the
extra land will remain under
the control of the respective
farmers.
Environment Minister
Newman based his ex-
propriation order on a report
from Mac Craig, an Owen
Sound lawyer, who headed an
inquiry on the matter last
April, According to Mr.
Newman, Mr. Craig's report
states that in choosing a route
Hydro took more land use fac-
tors into account than just the
disruption of agricultural land.
He citedsuch examples as the
number of river crossings, num-
ber of properties affected and
the number of diagonal land
severences involved.
Mr. Newman recognized the
objections lodged by area far-
mers but has decided to go
ahead anyway.
Liberal MPP Murray Gaunt,
who campaigned against 'the
route, could only comment that
the reduction of corridor wid-
ths was a helpful concession,
but the ideal solution would
have been a re-routing of the
power lines.
