Clinton wins again
The Clinton Soccer Club
travelled to St. Mary's on the
weekend and outplayed the
Spartans 5.2 in a third Division
League match, to retain their
hold on top spot.
Game time was postponed for
SO minutes until a thunder-
storm passed over and the
referee declared the field
playable.
Clinton, never in trouble,
found the wet surface suited
their style of play with some
'great sliding tackles from Pon
McDaid, Don Armstrong and
Bandy Millar who were in their
elements.
The strong cross-wind and
intermittent , showers slowed
, the game down considerably
with many passes being blown
astray. However, Clinton
playing well despite the con-
ditions, soon went ahead on a
fine goal by Brian Jewitt who
kicked in the rebound from a
shot by Charlie Lipp which had
hit the cross „ba r.
Shortly afterwards, Clinton
went two up when Jewitt again
was in the right place to hit
home a rebound when Don Ar.
mstrong smacked one off the
cross-bar.
A few minutes later, Graham
Yeata, plaYing?;out of position
at half-baelt, sent in a high shot
from 40 yards -put which beat
the St. Vary'S'floalkeeper and
went in under• the top right
hand corner.
Seconds before half time,
Clinton stopped for a breather,
and St. Mary's took advantage
of the lull to scare and make it
3-1 at the half time whistle.
The second half was all Olin-
ton and they increased their
lead when Lipp made no
mistake on a Penalty shot after
being brought down inside the
box,
St. Marys never gave up and
closed the gap to 4.2 with a
well taken goal when they
caught the Clinton defence
standing still.
Gerry Lobb put the game
beyond doubt when he scored
from a scramble in front of the
net to make the final result 5-2
for Clinton.
Although the entire team
played well, special mention
goes to Don McDaid, Don Arm-
strong, Randy Millar, Brian
-Jewitt and Charlie Lipp who
excelled themselves. Also Der-
win Carter, subbing in goal for
injured Doug Rielly,-once again
did a fine job.
Clinton has no game this
weekend, but have a big date
coming up on June 29th when
they play at home 'to Grand
Bend in the second round of
the Third Division Cup. Game
time 6 P,m, at the Arena. Park.
They need your continued
support, so come out and cheer
them on!
Minors lose four
Clinton Minor Soccer team's
playing on the weekend lost all
their games. The Atom game
between Exeter and the
"Sharks" was postponed.
Clinton pee-wees played
Seaforth Continentals losing 7-
1, while the 'B' pee-wees played
Goderich and lost 7-2.
Both Mosquito teams were
defeated, - the 'A' Mosquitoes
against Goderich by 4-2 and the
'B' Mosquitoes (Cougars) by a
1-0 score against Seaforth
'Celtics'.
The "Cougars" played an ex-
cellent game and held the
powerful "Celtics" to a '
scoreless tie until 30 seconds
from the final whistle when
Seaforth scored a very con-
troversial goal. Brian Hall in
goal for the 'Cougars' had a
great game,
