This Sunday will be an excellent chance for Clinton
and area residents to come out and see some of the
best soccer action in Huron County as the Clinton Soc-
cer Club battle Ingersoll at the Clinton Park at 6 p.m. as
Clinton tries to extend its winning streak to five games.
In first place in the Third Division of the London and
District Soccer League after only two years of playing,
the Clinton team have won two league games, tied
another, and last Sunday they beat the German
Canadians in the first round of Third Division Cup play.
Soccer is the fastest growing sport in the local area.
Two years ago, it was virtually non-existant and today,
nearly every town in Huron County has a minor soccer
program that now includes 800 boys from eight years
and up.
As well, soccer has taken a strong foothold in Clinton
as evidenced by the strong showings of Clinton teams.
Last Friday, the Central Huron Secondary School team
won the Huron-Perth Championship trophy by beating
Seaforth High School, and the Clinton Soccer Club,
which is composed of a' large number of boys from the
-CHSS team, is now in top spot in their league.,
The idea for a Clinton team surfaced in November of
1972 when Don Armstrong and Graham Yeats talked
about setting up a program for area boys under 16
years. As a result of this meeting and many others, the
Clinton Minor Soccer Atsociation and the Clinton Soc-
cer Club were formed in March, 1973.
The Senior Club was accepted into the London and
District Third Division last year and the aim of the local
boys was to import a few players to go along with the
local talent and to place halfway in the standings in
their first year, and by the third season, they were
hoping for promotion to the Second Division,
(Promotion is given to the team who finish in top spot in
their division.)
Last season, the Clinton entry finished fifth out of nine
teams using only two imports. This year, using only one
out of town player, captain Charlie Lipp, the team,
boasts of seven players from the championship CHSS
team.
The Clinton Soccer Club has also been complimented
on having one of the best playing facilities in the
league, thanks to the Clinton Recreation Committee,
and this has given the Clinton young team enthusiasm
and spirit to go all the way this year.
If you've never seen good soccer action before, or if
your an avid follovVer, come out this Sunday at 6 p.m.
and see your local team in action,
