Centennial Band, Which has three mem- bers.from Vanastra, won first prize for their limit at the Spring Fair Parade on Satur- day. Congratulations. The band also performed two con- certs at the fair grounds. If you are wishing to join the band you must put your name in as soon as Possible because there is a waiting list and your name must be on it. Ths Centennial Band ere making plans to have con- certs on Sunday evening at the park in Vanastra, It would be nice to go to a band con- cert at a park again. Work Party This Saturday June 8, there will be a stag work day for all volunteers at the community Centre. It starts at 8 a.m. but if you're a little late, it's all right, they will be there most of the day. They are building the wading pool and all the pyramids and playthings for the children. If you have children, you owe it to them to come and help, because the sooner it's finished, the sooner they can go to the park and play or swim instead of sitting on the stump won- dering what to do next: Please come all you healthy strong men, we really need you. Meths. Sympathy of the community goes out to Mr. and Mrs, Robert D, Elgie in the death of their sister, Mrs. Joe McBride, the former Margaret Elgie. United Church Greeting into the sanctuary last Sunday morning were Mrs. John Riley and on Buchanan. The ushers were Bev. Bromley, Larry Howatt, Ken Lenginan and Darrel Shobbrook. Rev. Jim Hummel of St. Helen's was the guest minister and his message was "The power of vanishing Christ. Music was enjoyed from the Junior Choir. The Hymnbook on the Com- munion table had been placed in the church in loving memory of Mrs. Emerson I-leak, who passed away two years ago this week, The Hymn Book has been given by Emerson and family. The flowers on the memorial stand were placed in loving memory of Mr, Harold Philip by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Medd. The flowers on the flower stands were in loving memory of Mr. Alex Riley by his wife, Ora and family. Piano Recital Many enjoyed the Ritual presented by students and guests of Gail Lear, sponsored by the Aimwell unit of UCW, on Wednesday night, May 29th, in the United church. Piano solos were played by Julie Snell, Karen Wood, Kathy Radford, April Moore, Christine McNeil, Karyn Mann, Jim Laidlaw, Steven Sperling, Wanda Plaetzar, Ruth Taylor, Pam Gerrie, Karen Durnin, Susan Jamieson, Ian Mann, Bruce Stainton, Sally Pollard, Ken Pollard, Sylvia Beard, Janet Wood, Joanne Wood. Duets were given by Susan Jamieson and Karen Durnin, Ken and Sally Pollard, Joanne and Janet Wood, The Wingham Off-Beats, Anne Campbell, Debbie Hanula, Stephen Burke, Pam Gerrie, Ian Mann. The Nutcracker Suite was arranged by Ada Richter, was sung by the Londesboro Six Pack, Danny and David Lear, Tom and Ken Pollard, Wayne Lyon and Darrell Shobbrook, Organ and piano music was played by Genevieve Allen and Gail Lear. Muriel Sewers and Norma Glousher, last year's leaders, conducted the ceremony, Those graduating were Ruthanne Penfound, Debbie Westerhout, Judy Carter, Lorna Riley, and Nancy Sottiaux. Sandra Westerhout then showed her interesting slides on her trip to the Barbados. The graduates served lunch to their guests, their mothers and other members. W.I. Euchre Guests from Blyth, Clinton and Walton attended the W.I. dessert euchre and bake sale on Tuesday night. President, Mrs, Harry Tebbutt, welcomed all, with 14 tables in play, Winners were: ladies' high, Mrs. Elsie Youngblutt; lone hands, Mrs. Charles Cun- ningham; low, Mrs. Bert Shob- brook; men's high, Mrs. Mac Brooks, (playing as a man); lone hands, Mrs. Mae Gibson; low, Mrs. Alma Tyndall. Door prizes were won by Mrs. Higgins, and Gordon Murray. Happy Birthday was sang to Mrs. Lizzie Scott, who was celebrating her 94th birthday that day and was presented with a basket of flowers. Personals The village was saddened on Thursday night by the sudden passing of Alex Riley in his 55th year. Sympathy is exten- ded to his wife and family, Sympathy is also extended to the family of Mr. Bill Wells, Clinton who passed away on Thursday, after a lengthy illness, Mrs. Ida Townsend is a patient in Clinton Hospital since Tuesday May 28th. We hope she will soon be home. Mr, Ben Riley returned home on Tuesday, May Ofith from spending a few days in St, Joseph's Hospital, London. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lee visited their daughter, Mr, and Mrs. Stewart Mustard of Kit- chener and attended the mother and father banquet on Wednesday, May 29th at the Crystal Ball room of the Walper Hotel in Kitchener. Barbara is in the graduating class of St. Marys School of Nursing. The Bert Hunking family held a family gathering on Sun- day at the home of Mr, and Mrs. Ted flunking and family. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hunking and family, R.R. 1, Auburn; Mr. and Mrs. Rae flunking and family London; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Dewar and family, Atwood; Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Manning, Blyth; Mr. and Mrs. Stan Johns and family, R.R. 1, Clinton; and Marie Bunking of Tansania, Africa. Maxine returns to Tansania on Thursday. Londesboro W,I. members who attended the district an- nual at. Belgrave on Monday were Mrs. Harry Tebbutt, Mrs. Eric Anderson, Mrs. Margaret Taylor, Mrs. B. Shobbrook, Mrs. Eva Howatt and Mrs. Ted Fothergill. Rev. McDonald preached An- niversary services at Trinity church, Ashfield Township last Sunday morning and Brick Calvin church on Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Rad- ford spent the weekend in Niagara Falls, visiting Mr. and Mrs. Wally Riley. Mrs. Eva Howatt visited on the weekend with her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Hodgert, Kirkton and attended Roy's church cemetery decoration. Visitors on Friday with Mrs. G. Cowan were Mrs. Howard Cowan and Mrs. George Gilfillan, Clinton. Visiting with Mr. and Mr's. Robbie Burns 'are her. mother, Mrs. Annie Cook of Glamis and her sister, Mrs. Mary Vaillan- court of Burlington. Visitors on the weekend with Mrs. G. Cowan were her son, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cowan and Greg of Hanover. Mr. and Mrs. Colin Paterson London, spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Burns. They are leaving on Sunday, June 9th for a three weeks visit in Scotland. Mrs. Elsie Youngblutt spent the last weekend of May with her grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kennedy, Stratford. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Riley and girls of London spent the weekend with his mother, at- tending the funeral of his father Mr. Alex Riley. Mrs. Hubert Schroeder of Exeter is spending a few days with her sister Mrs. Alex Riley and Edward. KINETTE ACTIVITIES The fund raising projects of the Kinette club this year in- cluded a fall and spring rm., mage sale, a food booth at the Hensall spring fair and the Fid- dlers Contest, They are planning to have an afghan draw the Saturday night of' the Fiddlers Contest, June 15. They had a Harvest Dance, and sold tickets on a three minute shopping spree or $50 in cash, and assisted the Kin- smen with the Cystic' Fibrosis Dance on May 4th. Kinette cook books were also sold, Profits from these projects are returned to the community in many ways. On Palm Sunday, the Kinettes visited the shut- ins from this community and gave them a potted plant, and at Christmas they take them a tray of assorted homemade goodies and fruit. Two scholarships of $25 each are presented to the highest boy and girl in grade 8 each year. The club entertains patients at the Goderich Psychiatric Hospital and sponsoras an Italian child through .the Canadian Save the Children Fund. For several years, they have canvassed the community for the Ability Fund and made donations to the Arthritis Society, Remembrance Day Wreath, C.N.I.B., Salvation Army, War. Memorial Hospital, Girl ,Guides, Mental Health Association, and Cystic Fibrosis. A donation was made to Huronview at Clinton to help buy a bus for the patients. The Kinettes entertained the patients at the Queensway Nur- sing Home at Christmas time and presented them a gift. They sponsored a eight week babysit- ting course for the teenagers in the community, and paid for a months supply of ice time so the children could have free skating. The Kinettes have helped the Kinsmen pay for the Firemen's Resuscitator, and made a donation to the Firemen for the fireworks, Each, Kinette helped with a childs exercise program here in Hensall over the fall and win- ter months. United Church Notes Holy... n Communion,. Confir- matio, and the Welcoming of members from other churches was held in Hensall United Church Sunday morning.' The choir sang the anthem "Come, spirit come", and Rev. Don Beck preached on the sermon topic "Following Jesus". Candidates being confirmed were Mrs. Doris Hamilton, Chiselhurst; Nancy McCurdy, Dale Simmons, Better Beer, Susan Beck, Paul Wareing, Deans Reaburn, Christine McGregor, Dwight Consitt, Mrs. Joan Corbett, Mrs, Linda MacMillan and Mr. Don MacMillan, all of Hensall. Mrs. Joan Corbett and Mrs. Linda MacMillan received the rights of baptism. Members being welcomed from other churches were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Parsons . Chiselhurst, Mr. and Mrs. Earle Shapter and Mr. and Mrs. Pat O'Brien. The flowers in the church were from the funeral of the late Harry Armstrong. Explorers and atm, Picnic Carmel Presbyterian Ex- plows first Annual picnic was held last Saturday at the home of Mrs. Al Hoggarth, Nine Ex- plorers and three COG mem- bers attended. Soccer game before lunch proved that both teams were equal, however after lunch the races brought forth winners, The trophies for first, second and third places as over all champions were won by Becky Baker, Sandra Nixon, and Murray Taylor. Greg Hoggarth kicked his shoe the farthest.and Lisa Stretton and Becky Baker won the three• legged race, Paul Hoggarth won the sack race and Murray Taylor and Paul Hoggarth won the wheelbarrow race. Jerry Faber won the OW, race. Explorers and cQc. are finished for now but will resume again in the fall. Obituary At Twilight Haven in Petrolia, on Sunday June 2, 1974, Kathleen E. Neil (Phaff) formerly of the Hensall area died in her 70th year. She was the wife of the late John B. Neil who predeceased her in September 1973, dear mother of Mrs. Doreen Eger- deen, Kamloops, B,C., and Ronald Neil, RR 1, Mill Bay, B,C. and sister of Mrs. Helen Tebbutt and Mrs. Alvin (Ruby) McNichol both of London. One brother Nelson predeceased her 1962. Also surviving are two grandchildren , Christine and D'Arcy Egerdeen, and several neices and nephews in the Hen- sail area. The late Mrs. Neil rested at the Bonthron Funeral Chapel in Hensall when funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 5, with Rev. W. Jarvis of. liciating. Interment in the Exeter Cemetery, Personal Mr. Clifford Price and friend from Toronto and Mr, and Mrs. Ron Page and son David of Burlington were recent visitors with Mr, and Mrs. Harry Hor- ton in Hensall.
