By JABEZ RANDS (As part of Clinton's upcoming Centennial next year, Jobez Rands of Clinton is writing ci weekly column on the history of the town.) Do you remember when there were two saw mills running in Clinton? In the years 1870 to 1900, Mr. James Fair had a steam saw mill on the north side of his. flour mill. He did a large amount of custom work for the good people in this part of Huron County. He also saved a considerable amount of money for his flour mill operation because at that time, most flour was shipped in wooden barrels and he made his own barrels right from the logs hauled to the mill. The properties now occupied by the Brewer's Retail store, the board of education and the back part of the PUC property were often covered with logs waiting to go through the saw mill: During part of the 1870's and 1880's, Mr. James Walker owned and operated a steam saw mill on the south side of Huron Street about 130 feet west of Erie Street on lot 813, where a' fine frame dwelling is now situated. We cannot locate, at the present time, an exact account of how many years this mill was in operation. Mr. and Mrs, Cameron Howlett of Lambeth visited recently with Mr. and Mrs. Albert McFarlane,' Any girl wishing to take the spring 4-H project- Taking a look at yourself please contact the leaders, Mrs. Donald Cart- wright and Mrs. Allan Craig by February 23rd. Mrs. Ronald Rathwell, Michael and Janice of Parkhill visited last Saturday with the former's mother, Mrs. Celia Taylor. Miss Carol Rueger of Clinton spent the weekend with her sister, Mrs. Donald Cartwright, Mr. Cartwright, David, Derrick and Lorie. Pastor and Mrs. Alfred Fry have returned home after visiting their daughter and husband, Dr, and Mrs. Fred. Haldenby at Mactier, Ontario where theyfare employed by the Ontario Department of Health. The Haldenbys move from place to' place with a mobile unit which locates at different schools where their work is en- tirely with children. This is a dental health project. The Frys were delighted with the nor- thern highways and scenery and the number of wild birds which came to the feed station at the Haldenby home at McKellar. There were at least 10 different species. They never saw one sparrow so came to the conclusion that all the Stratford spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Moss.
