Local members of Parliament
ere warned recently that
Welt action must "he taken or
there will be a real crisis in the
milk industry in Ontario.
The warnings came from
ack ArMstrong of Auburn
hairman of the Huron County
ilk Committee and Doug
Fraser, Walton, representing
the county's cream producers
and was delivered at the an-
nual Members of Parliament
dinner sponsored by the Huron
County Federation of
agriculture.
Robert McKinley, MP for
Huron, Jack Riddel, MPP for
Huron and Murray Gaunt,
MPP for Huron-Bruce were
present to hear more than a
dozen briefs from county farm
organizations.
Mr. Armstrong told them
that, the number of milk
producers in Ontario last year
dropped by eight per cent and
in Quebec the reduction was 10
per cent. He said long ,hours
and rising costs were driving
dairy farmers into cash crop-
ping and other more attractive
forms of agriculture. He called
for a five-year program in
dairying which would be an-
nounced in advance and up-
dated annually. He said far-
mers needed an immediate in-.
crease of $2 per hundredweight
in the price of industrial milk.
Mr. McKinley commented
that the long-term dairy policy
was something he had pushed
for years. Mr: Riddell said he
felt the changes were needed
but thought the trend away
from the dairy farm would con-
tinue because farmers could see
how much more they could get
for less work in other fields.
ack Stafford of Wroxeter
replied that at least a new
olicy might keep dairy farmers
in the business where cash
cropping was not possible.
Mr. Armstrong warned that
if milk'production isn't soon in-
creased "I don't know how
much longer some of the small
processing plants will stay in
business". He said many of
these are working at " half-
thiottle now.
Mr. Fraser reminded the
Members that if the plants
close, urban areas will be hurt
as well. He told of one
processing plant that had
closed, with `lay-off of eight
men last summer. Of these he
said, one was on a Manpower
retraining program and the
other seven were still unem-
ployed.
Mr. Riddell wondered if it
would be possible to reactivate
these plants that have closed if
milk prOduction rises again.
Mr. Gaunt asked Mr. Arm-
strong if he had figures for' the
decline in Huron County milk
producers. Mr. Armstrong told
him that the northern part of
the county hasn't dropped as
much as some other parts, but
the average was about the
Huron 4-H
Clubs open
for new
members .
The 1974 4-H program is un-
derway in Huron County and
according to club organizers in-
dications are that the upcoming
year will be the best ever. Club
membership, they note, has
doubled in the past four years
and as a result it is possible to
offer more programs than ever
before.
Although membership is
strong the organizers explain
they are pushing for more
members this year in an effort
to keep the 4-H organization
growing in the-County.
A project was begun two
years ago aimed at helping to
introduce new people into the
4-H program. This was done by
asking club leaders and mem-
bers to send the names and ad-
dresses of young people they
thought might be interested in
joining 4-H to the Department
of Agriculture office at Clinton.
During the past two years,
however, the project has
received very little support,
During 1974 the organization
is being encouraged to put new
effort into the scheme. The
organizers are asking each and
every member to write down
the names and address of three
friends who are not involved in
the 4-H program and send
