After a delicious pot luck dinner, Miss Jane Pengilley, Huron's Home Economist spoke about the metric system, giving first a history of the measuring system and also how 'to think Metric. The change of the metric system will be gradual and will probably not be converted until 1980. Af- ter a comprehensive study of Japan - the language, arts, music, monetary system,, manufacturing, social and coin, mercial life, these ambitious youngsters elected, to enact for one day all that they had lear- ned. A CBC camera crew was on hand to tape this fine effort - this was done before the close of last year's school year - so at last it was a big thrill for all concerned to see the actual program on the screen. • * * "Harlo Bucky" a neat little pacer owned jointly by Messrs Frank Cook, Lorne Brown and Ross McEwan was second last Thursday night at the Windsor raceway. Also at the same raceway, "Hickory Lassie" a trotter owned by Frank Cook placed second on 'Sunday after- noon last. * * First the recent appointment of a woman as Lieutenant- Governor of the Province of Ontario and now the appoint- ment of a woman as a first in the position of a deputy minister. This honour came to Dorothea Crittenden, a career civil , servant for 36 years„when Premier William Davis 'appoin- ted her to be deputy to the Minister of Community and Social Services. Miss Critten- den was born in Blyth and was educated in St. Thomas and London. * * * More T. Berry The first meeting for 1974 of Group,1 of the Brucefield UCW was held on January 14 in the United church school room. Mrs. E. Keys and Miss M.E. Swan," were in charge of the devotions with. Mrs. Ham at the piano. The meeting opened with the singing of a hymn and the Lord's Prayer, repeated in unison. Miss Swan read a poem en- titled "The old year" and she also read a Psalm, Mrs. Keys spoke on the New Year and received the offering which was dedicated by Miss E. Swan. A hymn was sung and this part of the meeting closed with prayer. Mrs. B; Walters, the new president, took charge of the business portion and Mrs. E. Sellery gave the secretary's report.
