This scene at the Clinton race track last week was more reminiscent of the by-gone days in
Huron County, but actually, it got the job done quite well. Instead of the regular jog cart,
Leonard Hunter hooked up Miss Belle Bars to a sleigh for her afternoon exercise. Miss Belle
Bars, owned by Frank Fowler of Londesboro, was second in the invitation pace last Satur-
day in London. She is trained and driven by Frank MacDonald of Clinton. (News-Record

1 Building construction in Clinton hit an all time high of nearly $1.1 million last year. Included
in that total were 28 new homes and a new 16 unit, $200,000 apartment building pictured
above, being erected by Huron Pines Realty of Clinton. (News-Record photo)
January Is the March of Dimes month in Canada, and in Clinton, canvassers will be
knocking on doors on January 28. The ability fund helps many handicapped adults to func-
tion in society rather than just lonely watchers. Summer camps for the disabled are another
result of public generosity. In Clinton, .the local chairman is Mrs. Robert Homuth.

One of the largest family
Christmas gatherings over the
past holiday season must have
been the celebration held at the.
Orange Hall, Clinton Dec. 25,
and presided over by Mrs.
George Bailey - when 48 mem-
bers of her family joined her for
Christmas dinner.

Back home after a 12 - day
Christmas holiday in England
are Mr. and Mrs. Ted Davies,
RR 5, Clinton. They had a good
time visiting relatives and
friends but reported Britain to
be in the throes of a crisis never
seen since the grim days of the
last war. Many stores and
homes were using gas lamps to
replace the acute shortage of
electricity. Only every third
street light on at nights and a
total absence of outdoor Christ-
mas lights was particularly
noticeable in the heart of
fashionable London. A few out,
side trees tried desperately to
keep the festive spirit with
coloured fake lights.
Even the Davies' arrival and
departure was accented by a
shortage - not electricity - but
porters for luggage - none to be
had. Mrs. Davies said the
British people are trying .hard
to cope - but many feel the need
of a "Churchillian leader" to
see the country through this
crisis.

Farmers should take care of
who they let use their property
for snowmobiling if they don't
want to be held liable for in-
juries on their property, an in-
surance company spokesman
,told members of the Huron
County Federation of
Agriculture at the monthly
director& meeting in Clinton
last Thursday night.
Stan Cairns, supervisor of
the London and District office
of the Co-operators Insurance
Agency of Guelph told the
group that people using a far-
mer's property fall into three
categories and to each the far-
mer has a different degree of
responsibility.
The first group, he said, is
the trespasser who shouldn't be
there and the landowner has no
responsibility for his safety ex-
cept that he cannot deliberately
lay a trap for him.
The second class, he said, is
as they entered the town hall
for their first meeting of the
year, The newly acquired piano
gave much pleasure, especially
when Elmer Trick played some
beautiful selections, old
favourite songs were sung and
square dances negotiated for
the future.
There was a short business
meeting and four new members
were welcomed bringing the
roll call up to 45.
Group 5 entertained with the
card party and refreshments -
results as follows: winners lone

the licensee, or a person who is
on the property with the
owner's knowledge, if not his
permission. It is up to the lan-
downer to warn this person of
any dangers such as fences or
open pits.
The third category is the in-
vitee, or someone invited on to
the property and for whose
presence the landowner will
receive financial gain. It is im-
portant, Mr. Cairns said, that
in such cases the landowner
contact his insurance agent to
have a special clause added to
his liability insurance policy.
Mr. Cairns told the farmers
that they should review their
present policies for liability and
make sure that there was a
minimum of $100,000 coverage
and suggested they would be
wise to carry $300,000 coverage
because the cost of settlements
was increasing.
Protect shrubs and
evergreens with wrapped twine
or burlap. Small evergreens
could be covered with an A-
frame type structure to take the
weight of the snow, suggests
Burke McNeill, horticultural
specialist with the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food.
