Turnberry St., Brussels 519-887-6951 Gas Bar & Family Restaurant Open Boxing Day December 26 We'd like to step in with our best wishes for a happy and joyous holiday season. Thanks for helping us put our right foot forward. From Betty, Merle, Jennie & Sherry 256 Josephine St. Wingham 519-357-1840 Maybe the economy has taken adownward turn and your Christmasbudget has suddenly shrunk, but thatdoesn’t mean your holiday spiritneeds to follow suit.Hosts Steven Sabados and ChrisHyndman of CBC-TV’s hit daily talk show Steven and Chris have some timely tips on how you can be just as fashionable, your home just as festive, and your parties just as spectacular without spending a bundle this year. Start the season with the right attitude, says Hyndman. “This year of all years, Christmas is not about the presents – it’s the people who count.” So celebrate your family and friends with a fabulous seasonal soirée, but stick to the basics and focus your efforts. DECK ONE HALL There is no need to go overboard, the decorating duo says. You can keep things simple and tasteful by decorating one room – the living room. According to these design experts, now is the time to choose your holiday theme colours. Look at what inspires you in retail stores and interpret those themes at home. “If you love icy blue and silver ornaments, decorate everything from the tree to wrapping paper in the same palette,” Hyndman suggests. Build on this theme by incorporating non-holiday items to complement your décor. Sabados and Hyndman recommend displaying a silver teapot, perhaps some books with blue covers, a blue teddy bear … you get the idea. They also propose doing an ornament exchange with a friend – just be careful you keep track of your treasured heirlooms. You can make a beautiful centrepiece with everyday grocery store items, they say. Sabados invokes images of “a Victorian still life-beautiful pears in green or red, green grapes, even clementines can be mixed with inexpensive greenery from the floral section at your supermarket (like lemon leaves and eucalyptus).” For optimal effect, they suggest placing the fruits on a cake stand. Don’t forget flowers – “Paperwhites are the all-time favourite bulb for indoor forcing. Their large clusters of pure white flowers and their sweet, musky smell make them a holiday favourite. Plant the bulbs in decorative pots … in late November. They will flower in four to six weeks with seldom a miss,” Hyndman says. AS FOR DELECTABLE SERVINGS By asking people to bring their own drinks, you can cut down on a major expense. For appetizers, choose simply. According to Sabados and Hyndman each guest will eat approximately four appetizers per hour, so little pastries, or a basic cheese dish, are the way to go, as they require little money and effort and will keep guests with big appetites well-fed. There are recipes on CBC’s Steve and Chris website that can save you time, coin, and will impress your guests. AN EXCUSE TO DRESS UP Whether you’re a host, or a guest, bringing festive flare to the party is a must! This season, Sabados and Hyndman say you can’t go wrong with reds, metallics and winter whites. Red is one of Hyndman’s favourites. “It’s a classic holiday colour, especially in rich deep hues.” With metallics, Sabados says, “you can create instant glam and festive spirit, in gold, pewter, andeven rose.” He suggests one piece –a top, dress, shoes or bag.And “any item in a rich vanilla colour is the perfect winter white forthe holiday season. Think of it as analternative to your go-to blackbasics,” advises Chris. Twisting The Teddy Bear Twist was one of the most popular numbers at last week’s Christmas production of Is Santa Smarter? by Blyth Public School. The Grade 1/2 class performed the song, complete with their teddy bears and sunglasses. Zachary Walden, left, and Joy Pizzati got right into the moves.
