New Year to everyone. These are the
last news tidbits from Walton and
Brussels area for 2008. I would like
to thank all those who are willing to
allow me to share their stories of
adventures with the many readers of
The Citizen. Thanks to all who offer
words of encouragement and words
of appreciation for my writing, so
keep those stories coming as we look
forward to 2009.

Congratulations to Abby McGavin
on another successful campaign of
collecting warm winter coats, hats,
mittens and scarves for the homeless
in Toronto. Abby gathered over 80
coats and a large bag of other winter
items to take to Toronto. Brian,
Shelley, Abby McGavin, as well as
three other friends travelled to the
Emmanuel Howard United Church
to deliver the items. They were
greatly appreciated by the church
and will be distributed through their
outreach program.
While in Toronto, the group of six
attended the Tina Turner concert
held at the ACC. Abby reports that
Tina was amazing and it was a great
show to see.
Coming back to the Brussels area
from Alberta for a week’s holiday,
was Jamie Smith. He wanted to
come home to see everyone and
especially his new niece, Mia
Haggitt, daughter of his sister
Christa Haggitt. Jamie made the
rounds of seeing other relatives,
including Grandma and Grandpa,
Ross and Shirley Smith. He caught
up with mom, Christine for a few
days before his return to the west.
Returning from a stressful 10 days
away is Edna (Ralph) Pearson. Edna
spent the time at an Ottawa hospital
with her daughter Nancy and
grandson, Mark, watching over hiscritically ill six-year-old son, Jesse. He suffered a serious braincondition. We are pleased to report that hehas shown improvement and at thistime is hopefully out of the woods. He will have a long recovery aheadand our prayers are with Edna andher family.Edna’s daughter Nancy is married
to Murray Proctor and they live in
Irvine, just outside of Los Angeles,
California. She flew home to
Toronto, rented a car, met up with
Edna and they were off to Ottawa.
Edna reports that Nancy hadn'tdriven in snow in 18 years and didvery well. The weather in Ottawa on theirarrival was quite snowy. While theywere on their way on Dec. 8 andtravelling on the 401, they werepuzzled to see many people standingon the overpasses between Trentonand Kingston. It was around 3 p.m.and the people were waiting for the
motorcade travelling the Highway of
Heroes carrying the bodies of three
Canadian soldiers who lost their
lives in Afghanistan.
It was a very moving experience
and touching to see many Canadianand Royal Canadian Legionariesstanding at attention to show respectfor the fallen soldiers. The Walton Women’s Instituteheld its Christmas meeting and mealat the Walton Inn on Wednesday,Dec. 17. Following the meal therewas a short meeting, then membersexchanged their Secret Santa gifts.A belated party was held for InaMcGrath who celebrated her 80thbirthday a month ago. Illness hadpostponed the party until now.Sisters and sister-in-law, KathleenWilliamson, Evelyn Carter andHelen Williamson enjoyed cake withthe birthday girl. A surprise celebration was also
