HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-12-24, Page 32Morris-Turnberry is in solid shape financially when compared the other municipalities, councillors learned at their Dec. 16 meeting. In 2007, the municipality’s debt per household was $171, compared to the provincial average of $641. The municipality’s total reserves stood at $1,742 per household compared to an average of $1,188 across the province. *** Mayor Dorothy Kelly will represent Morris-Turnberry on the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority for 2009. She will replace councillor Mark Beaven. Councillor Bill Thompson said that it’s good for councillors to sit on the MVCA. “It’s a real eye- opener”, he said. *** There was good news and bad news for councillors on the insurance front. They learned that the 2009 cost of their municipal insurance coverage will be $54,313.56, which is only a .78 per cent increase over 2008. On the other hand, a letter from Mosey and Mosey, providers of the employee benefit plan estimated the cost of the plan would increase by 30.6 per cent for 2009. *** As of Dec. 12, the municipality had issued 85 building permits for 2008 with a value of $5.6 million. Highlights include eight permits for single detached homes, 13 for additions to dwellings, two for livestock facilities (with a worth of $1.2 million) and 26 for agricultural accessory buildings. *** Greg Diamond, acting roads manager, was given permission to order 50 trees from the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority. Some of the trees will be planted along Brandon Road while some are intended for the Belgrave pump house. Deputy-mayor Jim Nelemans said he was in favour of getting the trees but he felt it was important to stick with the municipal policy that the trees be planted on the landowner’s land, not the municipal right of way so that municipal staff didn’t have to keep them watered. *** The total assessment withing the municipality for 2009 will increase by three per cent. *** The following are the winners from the Kinsmen Turkey Bingo held on Thursday, Dec. 11: kids’ game, Owen Weber, Hayden Robinson, Hunter McCullagh, Jaida Ruff Robertson, Emily Meier, Mason Weber, Tyson Michie, Maya Robinson, Marshall Haines, Brock Weber, Caitlin Daw, Sarah Cook, Brianna Yuill; turkeys, Hazel Haines, Dona Knight, Deb Jardin, Laura Herrington, Kathy Bridge, Marjorie Morrison, Barb Black, Isabel Campbell; share the wealth, Dona Knight, Marjorie Stroud, Eppie Laurener and Amelia Pletch.
