We asked the Grade 1 students at
Blyth Public School...
What does the word “Christmas”
mean?
“It means when it gets to the
middle of the winter. Then we have
Christmas and get presents and have
time with our moms and dads.
All Christmas you can go outside
in the snow. I think they started it so
kids could have time with their
parents.”
- Mikayla
“That’s a tough one. I think it’s
because that’s when Jesus was born.
It’s a special day because Jesus’s
birthday is right after Christmas.” -
Griffie
“It means that Christmas is
coming and it means that Santa is
coming. I think they started it so we
could all get presents.” - Brooke
“It means that people are
celebrating Christmas.” - Sara
“It means sharing and not getting
presents, but giving presents to other
people.
It’s special because baby Jesus’s
birthday was on Christmas, so we
get presents for each other so we can
be happy for baby Jesus.”
- Marissa
“It means that Jesus was born. Wecelebrate Jesus being born and geteverybody gifts.” - Joy“It means putting up a Christmastree. We put the tree up for Santa toput the presents under. I think it was
Santa that started Christmas,
because he liked us.” - Emma
“It means that it’s Christmas Eve
and that Santa’s coming down from
the sky. He started Christmas
because he wanted to give us all
presents.
He hasn’t been doing it long, I
think last year was the first
Christmas.” - Heather
“It means that it would be fun for
kids and it’s when Jesus was born
too.” - Evy
“It’s because Christmas is God’s
birthday. My mom told me that. We
celebrate and get each other presents
because it’s when God was a baby.”- Zach“It means that Santa’s coming.Santa started it because he thoughtthere was going to be a lot ofpresents. I think the first Christmas
was when the cavemen had
Christmas.” - Adam
“It means going skating and
playing hockey. Oh, and
snowmobiling. They called it
Christmas because that way they can
all get presents.”
- Logan
“It means that you get presents. It
makes people happy. It’s good
because then people can get new
clothes and candy canes.” - Tyler
“It’s all about being thankful and
giving thanks to Santa. It’s a
thankful time of the day and the
year.” - Simon

This year, when planning your
holidays entertaining, keep these
tips in mind and you’ll be sure to
enjoy the holiday season stress-free.
FOOD TIPS
• Appetizers:Easy and elegant,
many appetizers can be prepared in
a pinch. Try preparing a cheese
platter with seasoned walnuts.
• Winning combinations:Mix
ready-made food with homemade
food to keep the prep work simple
and the food tasting delicious.
• Tried and true:Prepare foods
that you’re familiar with so you
will know how long dishes take to
cook and how they should taste.
• Delicious dessert:Dessert
doesn’t have to be time-consuming
and complicated to be mouth
watering. Simply top a small bowl
of ice cream with sliced banana,
walnuts and dark chocolate sauce.
PLAN AHEAD
• Menu:Determine the menu in
advance. Will it be a buffet or a sit-
down?
• Shop:Create a detailed shopping
list so your fridge and pantry are
stocked with everything you need.
• Music:Don’t forget to plan your
holiday playlist. The right music
will enhance the mood of your
party.
THE DAY BEFORE
• Decor:Set and dress the table.
Place candles and a few simple
flowers to add intimacy and colour
to your setting.
• Cook:Make appetizers the day
before. Many dips can be
refrigerated overnight. Try puréed
walnuts with garbanzo beans for a
tasty hummus dip.
• Fridge space:Our cold winters
are perfect for storing white wines,
beer and pop outside when your
fridge is full. Fill a large cooler or
pail with snow and add beverages
of choice.
