A night of music and literature
organized in part by Blyth author
Emily Wierenga is set for Jan. 24 in
Wingham to benefit Bethany Homes
For Children.
Wierenga, who penned the book
Save My Children, a history of
Bethany Homes, its founders and the
children who passed through its
doors, will be reading from her book
that night hoping to garner donations
for the home.
The benefit will run from 7 p.m. to
11 p.m. at Coffee Culture in
Wingham. There will be no charge
for admission, but organizers are
asking for a donation. In addition to
Wierenga reading from Save My
Children, which will be on sale that
night, two faith-based musical acts,
Elsa Jayne of Waterloo and Turn On
The Waterworks from Stratford will
be performing as well.
Wierenga met both Jayne and the
members of Turn On The
Waterworks when they all
participated in a recent art showcase
in Waterloo.
Save My Children was released in
September, and Wierenga says the
book has been doing well. It has just
recently popped up on Amazon.ca
for sale.
Wierenga had worked with
troubled teenagers with her husband
Trenton during their time in Alberta,
where Bethany Homes sits. After
meeting the home’s founder Harvey
Jesperson, Wierenga was
commissioned to write the home’s
story for a book that was to be
released in collaboration with its
60th anniversary celebration earlier
this year.
The book focuses on the home and
the children the Jespersons oversaw
during their time there. Harvey, who
is now 90-years-old, no longer
works with children at the home and
his wife, Elsie, passed on years ago.
Wierenga began working as an
editor for a Christian newspaper in
Alberta before taking on the project.
She has also written for Adbusters,
Christian Week and Faith Today, in
addition to appearing on 100
Huntley Street and The Drew
Marshall Show to share the story of
her own troubled childhood,
struggling with anorexia nervosa
between the ages of nine and 13.
Wierenga is currently working on
another commissioned project
surrounding a Winnipeg family who
recently lost their daughter.
