The Women’s Institute met on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. with 14 members and 27 guests enjoying a turkey dinner catered by the Belgrave United Church Women. The president, Nancy Jardin, welcomed all and asked Rev. John Roberts to say grace. Nancy gave a brief outline of WI work during the past year. Thank you gifts were given to Jack Marks and Linda Campbell and some lucky people were given door prizes. The January meeting will begin with a potluck lunch at the Community Centre on Jan. 20. Entertainment will follow. Gladys Van Camp introduced Lila Procter who played the guitar, sang and led carol singing. Gladys read two Christmas poems. Nancy dressed in a colourful costume and gave some humorous readings before wishing everyone a Merry Christmas The Belgrave Seniors Community Club met on Dec. 5 for a turkey dinner at noon. The president, Muriel Coultes, welcomed 78 members and guests and read Poinsettias. Donations were brought for the food bank. Following the meal, Bruce Robertson entertained by playing guitar, singing and leading for the carol sing. Barbara Anderson thanked him with a gift. The next Seniors meeting will be on Friday, Feb. 6 beginning at noon with a potluck lunch. Mary Hunter welcomed everyone to the white gift service at Knox United Church, Belgrave on Sunday, Dec. 14. The church was decorated by several poinsettias that had been given to the church in memory of loved ones. Kim Dodds welcomed the congregation and gave the announcements. The Candle of Hope was lit by the Andrew Campbell family and the Advent hymn was sung. Gabriel Carter led in the responsive call to worship and Lindsay Shiell announced the hymn. Cassandra Carter then gave the prayer of approach. Andrea Shiell read the history of white gift Sunday. The junior choir of 18 young girls sang The Christmas Song and We Wish You A Merry Christmas. They were led by Lila Procter, with Elizabeth Stennett at the piano. The children came to the front for the children’s story, which was read by Kathleen and Emily Stennett. It was T’was the Fight Before Christmas”. The Sunday school presentation began with the smallest children singing, This Little Light of Mine, led by Shannon Bieman. Each child had a candle to hold up, and hide under a bushel. The senior students then put on a skit with Jessica Procter as a mom who was too busy for Christmas. When she decided to have a rest, four angels appeared to her. Lindsay Shiell was the Angel of Joy, Andrea Shiell was the Angel of Peace, Emily Stennett was the Angel of Hope and Kathleen Stennett was the Angel of Love. She presented the mom with a baby to represent the joy that the baby Jesus has come to provide. The congregation sang, Joy to the World. The white gift offering and the church offering were dedicated by Autumn Wightman. The white gift offering will be given to the project of the young people, Bicycles for Humanity. Sydney Wightman gave the prayers of the people. Amelia Pletch led in the ‘sending forth’ and the service closed with the benediction, Go Now In Peace. Jim Barnes thanked those who helped plan the service and to the children of the Sunday school for their participation. He also thanked the parents who had made arrangements for their children to be at the practices. Melissa Snyders will be in charge of the service on Sunday, Dec. 21 and all annual reports are to be to Ruth Gordon by that Sunday. Wednesday, Dec. 24 the Christmas Eve service will be at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend the service that evening. While attendance wasn’t quite what they had hoped for those who were present enjoyed an entertaining evening of crafts, games, cookie decorating and Christmas movies.
