Pigs lost when barn roof collapses in MorrisWith last week’s mix of rain andsnow, added weight and pressurewas being felt on rooves all overHuron County.A barn at Monoway Farms inMorris-Turnberry experienced apartial collapse in the late afternoonof Dec. 1. Paul Fear of Monoway Farms sayshe lost close to 20 pigs as a result ofthe collapse and can’t even estimateat the total property damage right now.Fear says several members of thecommunity assisted that night inclean-up and the mess wascompletely cleaned up by Dec. 4.Morris-Turnberry’s chief buildingofficial Steve Fortier says thecollapse was the only one in Morris-
Turnberry last week and that the
barn was built according to the
standards of the current building
code.
Fear says he expects the roof to be
completely repaired in several
months, but that it will not be an
overnight process. The pigs that
would normally occupy that wing ofthe barn have been moved to theother side, so there isn’t anyinconvenience right now to theMonoway Farms business.Huron East chief building officialPaul Josling says he received “acouple” of calls last week about
collapses, but said nothing was so
major that it needed immediate
attention. He said there had been
some small roof collapses and
partial collapses.
Josling plans on dealing with the
collapses in Huron East this
week.

Scott Somers of Brussels was
released from police custody
pending an appeal on his conviction
of sexual assault in Goderich on
Dec. 3.
Somers was sentenced to four
years in a federal penitentiary along
with a 20-year listing in the sexual
assault registry and a 10-year
weapons prohibition.
The charges stem from an incident
that occurred on July 11, 2004. By
court order the complainant cannot
be identified.
Superior Court Judge John
Kennedy handed down the sentence
after hearing summations from both
sides to clarify what he called
“aggravating factors.”
One of these factors, brought forth
by Crown Attorney Teresa Donnelly,
was Somers’ right to maintain
innocence throughout, his conduct
and what Donnelly said was his
failure to understand the gravity of
the offense and to show remorse.
The argument was made that Somers
denied the incident until charges
were brought forward, and when
charges were brought forward, his
story changed.
Kennedy said he tended to agree
with Donnelly that the act was
premeditated and that the
complainant was “targeted” by
Somers. However, Somers’ service
to his community through the
Brussels volunteer fire department,
among other avenues, was also taken
into consideration during
sentencing.
Somers was released from police
custody and the appeal process is
underway.
