The Blyth PeeWee Reps played
Zurich recently.
The second period had Zurich up
by three goals. Then with just two
minutes left, Blyth’s captain,
Spencer Stevenson scored a wrap-
around goal with an assist from
Arden Coultes and Dustin
Pennington.
That seemed to open up the
scoring for Blyth and they came
back to score three more goals in the
third period to take the lead. Goals
were scored by Stevenson, Mike
VanWyk and Matt VanWyk. Assists
went to Matt VanWyk with two,
Stevenson, Mike VanWyk, Wyatt
Carey and Connor Rodger.
With just 11 seconds left in the
game it looked like Blyth was going
to pull off the win. But Stevenson
and Rodgers each took a charging
penalty. The last 11 seconds of the
game had Blyth defending a one-
goal lead with three men out.
At one second before the victory,
Zurich scored to end the game in at
4-4.
The National Hockey League may
have its Original Six, but in
Goderich, the Lions are looking for a
whole dozen.
Young Canada Week is still three
months away, but that’s not stopping
YCW publicity chair Alvin McGee
from hunting down the original 12
teams that played in the very first
tournament back in 1950.
“We want them for the grand
opening of the 60th Young Canada
Week,” McGee said. “Our aim is to
have representatives from all twelve
teams.”
The 12 teams that made up the
inaugural tournament are Listowel,
Walkerton, Leeburn, Saltford,
Dungannon, Goderich Township,
Goderich, Seaforth, Brussels,
Wingham, Chesley and winners,
Lucknow.
After 60 years, the Young Canada
Week committee is taking a look
back to the very first group of kids to
strap on skates for a one-day
tournament back in 1950. McGee
said so far, he’s got one roster
covered - the very first champions,
the Lucknow Flax Flyers.
As for the rest of them, McGee has
a message: “We want to see you in
Goderich March 13,” he said.
Six decades have brought a
plethora of changes to the biggest
little hockey tournament in the world
- the introduction of a girls division,
the addition of a ‘AAA’ division, the
building of a new arena - however,
the love of PeeWee hockey remains
the very essence of Young Canada
Week.
Anyone who played in the 1950
YCW is asked to call Alvin McGee

PeeWee Reps play to a tie

Blyth NHL fans are keeping aclose eye on the Carolina Hurricanesthese days. Local boy, Justin Peters, 22, was
called up from the American Hockey
League’s Albany River Rats Dec. 2
after Carolina netminder Cam Ward
suffered a groin injury in a game
against Anaheim.
Though he has yet to play, Peters’
mom Janice said sitting on this
bench is just fine with him. “He
couldn’t be happier. It’s exactly
where he wants to be.”
Peters’ solid play with Albanyearned him his first recall toCarolina. A second-round pick in the2004 NHL entry draft Peters boastsa 3-7-2 season for Albany. His goalsagainst average is 2.79 and he has a
.911 save percentage and has earned
one shutout.
In 59 career AHL games, he has
earned a record of 20-28-2 with a
3.03 goals-against average.
Janice noted that her son’s arrival
to Carolina came just days before a
change on the Hurricane’s coaching
staff. It was announced Dec. 4 that
former coach Paul Maurice would be
back behind the bench to, according
to information on the team’swebsite, “jump start a team thatappeared to lack motivation and thedrive to take it to the next level.”He replaced Peter Laviolette. Janice said Justin knows how the
system works and is patient about
getting into an actual game, adding
that current goalie Michael Leighton
has paid his dues and is deserving of
this opportunity.
Peters’ stint at this point, will
depend on Ward’s recovery and to a
degree Leighton’s performance.
“For now he gets to practise with
them and it’s very exciting,” said
Janice.

The Brussels Novice Reps were
up against Howick in recent hockey
action.
Despite Howick being short-
staffed the action was back and forth
the entire game.
Noah Terpstra led the scoring for
Brussels with a total of seven goals.
Assists went to Hudson Smith and
Jack Pipe. Avery McArter netted a
hattrick, assisted by Brett Stevenson
and Darren Evans. Pipe added on to
