President, Erma Cartwright, opened the meeting with Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and O’ Canada. Donations were made to the Christian Blind Mission, Water Festival and Children’s Aid Society. Margaret Siertsema, convenor of Agriculture and Canadian Industries, introduced the guest speaker for the afternoon, Greg McClinchey. He gave a very informative talk on agriculture and shared many interesting and educational facts on the food that we eat. Erin Roy, granddaughter of Jewel Plunkett was the guest speaker at Huron Chapel’s Coffee House on Sunday, Nov. 23. She spoke of her experience as an Olympic torch bearer in China this past summer and shared pictures and stories about her adventure. Her opportunity to be a torch bearer was done as a memorial to her late uncle, Detective Const. Robert Plunkett and her presentation certainly honoured his life and accomplishments. As Erin carried her Olympic torch in August she was cheered on the by members of her and Rob’s family that made the journey to China with her. Rob grew up in Auburn and is certainly missed by family, friends, co-workers and his community. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2008. PAGE 29. The Auburn Seniors met on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the home of Tena Empey and enjoyed a potluck lunch. Following lunch, Brock and Janis Vodden entertained the group with pictures and stories of Blyth and Auburn. They showed pictures of the changes that have taken place to the main street of Blyth and many of the former business owners throughout the years. The Voddens also showed pictures of old buildings at the fairgrounds before the new arena was built, the starting of the turnip plant in Blyth, the coming of the railway and the re- routing of the creek. They shared some history on the hardware store in Auburn that was once owned by Tom Johnston. It was a very interesting and informative time enjoyed by everyone. Well done Atotal of 1,599 shoebox gifts were received at Huron Chapel by Nov. 29 and taken to Waterloo Processing Centre. This is an increase of 58 boxes over last year. Envira-North Systems donated a trailer to transport the items. An additional 240 boxes were collected and delivered by local groups. Organizers were pleased by the support for needy children, particularly by the generosity of Goderich District Collegiate Institute, Colborne Public School and St. Mary’s Catholic School. (Photo submitted) The sympathy of the community is extended to Aime and Yvonne Labrie on the passing of Aime’s mom recently. Sympathy also goes out to Tammy Labrie-Poels. Welcome home to Joel Scott and best wishes for a speedy recovery. The Scott family is very appreciative for all the support they have received from the community over the past couple weeks.
