As expressions of sympathy,
memorial donations to Town and
Country Support Services or Care
Partners, Seaforth would be
appreciated.
Almost a year to the day afterreceiving $4.8 million to replace two
aging elementary schools in St.
Marys, the Avon Maitland District
School Board credited community
and political co-operation for
securing an additional $2.3 million
in Education Ministry funding for
the project.
The official announcement came
Friday, Nov. 21, with Perth-
Wellington MPP John Wilkinson
joining dignitaries from the school
board and the Town of St. Marys at
the town’s recently-expanded
recreation/senior services centre.
“This is a great example of what
can happen when people come
together,” said Wilkinson. “(Students
in St. Marys will soon) have a 21st
century school for their 21st century
education.”
In November, 2007, the board
learned that the town’s Grade 4-8
facility, Arthur Meighen Public
School, had qualified for funding
under the province’s Prohibitive to
Repair (PTR) program – meaning
that an analysis concluded it would
be more expensive to maintain the
school over the long term than it
would cost to replace it.
The announcement of PTR
funding, however, made it clear that
the Ministry expected the board to
replace both Arthur Meighen and its
twinned Kindergarten-to-Grade 3
facility (St. Marys Central) with an
addition to St. Marys DCVI high
school.
In keeping with PTR procedures,
the board established a community-based facilities advisory committeeto consult with the public about theplan. Both through that officialchannel, and also through unofficial
channels (including frequent
statements in the media by St. Marys
mayor Jamie Hahn), the community
made clear its opposition to the
DCVI addition.
Wilkinson met with community
members and promised to take their
request – for funding to allow the
board to build a standalone facility
adjacent to the new recreation centre
– to Education Minister Kathleen
Wynne.
“The whole community came out,
looked at this proposal and came to a
consensus that they were willing to
get behind,” recalled Wilkinson. “I
was then able to go back (to Queen’s
Park) and say, ‘the community has
done what they needed to do.’”
“That’s what put me in the
position, as the MPP, to go to bat for
this project.”
Avon Maitland chair Meg Westley
added that the funding
announcement “was particularly
gratifying because it really
demonstrated how partnerships and
community involvement can reap
tremendous rewards.”
Wilkinson said that additional
funding became available as a result
of three significant changes: a seven
per cent increase in the overall
benchmark for new construction;
updated enrolment projections
provided by the board; and the
province’s recent commitment to all-
day, every-day kindergarten by
2010.
With a projected opening date ofNovember, 2010, the school willhouse all of the town’s students fromkindergarten to Grade 6 – acompromise of sorts, considering a
grassroots community group
collected hundreds of signatures
requesting a K-8 facility. Grades 7
and 8 students will relocate to St.
Mary DCVI.
