I saw two vehicles in the ditch on Friday afternoon and on Sunday, the tow truck went by our place a couple of times. Sunday started off not too badly, and I spent a couple of hours outside putting up Christmas decorations. In the afternoon the wind picked up, the snow started to fall, and it turned quite nasty. I was actually hoping for a snow day for the bus, but no such luck. It cleared enough that the buses went, unfortunately it was slow going even for the snowplows, so some of the routes I travel were not cleared which made for some very heavy roads. The bus radios were busy with calls that roads were not plowed, turn-arounds made for buses stuck and many buses running late. The joy of winter driving. This week is also the second week of the deer-hunting season. I imagine that it is going to be a challenging hunting week if the weather continues to be like this. I only saw one truck of hunters on the road Monday morning but I assume more were out there. Obviously, keep your eyes open when driving, because the deer will be on the move. Maxine Marks has been moved to Stratford hospital and will be having physical therapy as part of her recovery. Congratulations to Marni Knight on winning the lawn mower from the Brussels Minor Hockey draw. That news capped off a winning weekend for her. Steve and Marni had spent part of the weekend in Niagara Falls, and Marni enjoyed a winning streak there. Returning home to attend a Grey Cup party, she managed to win the Grey Cup football pool, then the phone call came the next morning that she had won the lawn mower. She better be buying lottery tickets. Returning from moose hunting near Dryden were Mike and Kelly Boven and friends. Unfortunately, they didn’t get a moose. Heading north for a sad occasion were Ross and Shirley Smith. They went to Sault Ste. Marie to attend the funeral of Shirley’s sister-in-law, Zona England, wife of Stewart England. Accompanying them were Shirley’s sister, Marg, from Lucknow and a cousin from Cambridge. Our condolences to the England and Smith families. Returning from a trip to Florida are Clint and Judy Emmrich. They were gone for two weeks and report temperatures were cool. The first week was spent on the ocean side at Daytona. Temperatures ran from 45 - 55°F and a jacket was needed most of the time. Moving over to the gulf side, and Treasure Island for week two, found things a little warmer, a balmy 65°F. If you were in a sheltered spot, out of the wind, it was quite nice, they said. Clint spent a lot of time fishing as well as doing the usual touristy things, relaxing and de-stressing, people watching and enjoying the scenery. They spent a day at Universal Studios, and did a lot of walking. They had great fun and enjoyed riding the roller coasters. They were away over the American Thanksgiving, but failed to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. The infamous Black Friday shopping spree saw them staying well away from the malls. They saw folks camping out on Wednesday outside stores in tents, and even hot tubs to be the first in line for the bargains. Crazy! They had a good drive home and didn’t see much snow until getting to Kippen on Sunday afternoon, and then were glad to be back in Walton. Returning from a great trip to Tennessee, North Carolina and the Smokey Mountains is Lily Fincham. She was away for seven days on a Great Canadian Tour and had a wonderful time. Some of the places they went included Dollyland, Nashville and the Country and Western Museum. They enjoyed a cable car ride up into the Smokey Mountains and after returning down they then drove up the mountain in the bus. It was beautiful. They also stayed three nights at Pigeon Forge where they enjoyed Christmas shows. They made a stop at the original Colonel Saunders restaurant and enjoyed of course, a chicken dinner. They also toured the museum there. They stopped at a Russell Stover Outlet where many folks picked up chocolate gifts for Christmas. They saw the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and it was beautiful. Lily reports having a wonderful time and can’t wait to go on her next adventure. Away for five days were Sharon, Becky and Eden Rapson. They went to Washington, D.C. to visit with daughter and sister Allison and husband Dave Lisle. They flew from Detroit and were there over the American Thanksgiving and Black Friday. From where Allison and her husband live, they can see the White House. The weather was like fall, with green grass and leaves on the ground. They didn’t attempt the Black Friday shopping but did a little shopping on Saturday. They had a wonderful visit and a great time. They were lucky and returned to Ontario and home before the storm moved in on Sunday evening. Celebrating birthdays this past week include Lin Steffler, Kaitlin Williamson, Daniel Fritz, Keith Williamson, Jim Fritz, Scott Godkin, Justin Hoegy, Malinda Johnston, Paul McCallum, Ron Godkin, Mary Bernard, Greg Bowers, Devin Bachert, and Rick McDonald. Congratulations to Charlene Thompson and Ben Finlayson on the birth of their first child, a little boy named Owen. Congrats to grandparents Bryan and Brenda Finlayson on a second grandson. Returning from a trip to Varadero, Cuba are four sisters, the former Johnson girls. Leona Armstrong and her sisters Helen from St. Catharines and Doris and Joan from Truro, Nova Scotia spent a week together in the southern island. It was not as warm as they would have liked, but they had a great time together.
