On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold $1 to $2 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $95 to $98 with sales to $102.75. Second cut sold $94 to $96. Cows sold steady. On Thursday veal sold $5 to $10 lower. Lambs sold on a strong active trade. Sheep and goats sold strong. Calves and yearlings sold on a steady market. At the vaccinated sale, calves and yearlings sold on a strong active trade. There were 153 steers on offer. Several local farmers and young people found themselves among the big winners in November at the 2008 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. One of the biggest winners was the Todd family from RR1 Lucknow. The Todd Sheep Company took home the coveted Don Head Challenge Trophy. This trophy is given to the Grand Champion Ram. The Todds also placed first in the three-lamb, ewe or wethers pen with a weight of 101 to 110 lbs. They placed second in the champion reserve pen of three lambs and eighth and ninth in the new crop milk lamb class. The Todds placed second and fourth in the purebred, grade or crossbred single market wether or ewe lamb class 51 to 80 lbs., second in the wether or ewe lamb, 81 to 90 lbs. class, second in the wether or ewe lamb, 91 to 100 lbs. class, first and sixth in the wether or ewe lamb, 101 to 110 lbs. class and fourth in the Suffolk wether lambs class. The Todd Sheep Company also came in second in the Hampshire special slick shorn ewe lamb class, and first place in another ram category. Shayrina Farms of RR2 Bluevale took home the James C. Bell Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the champion pen of three lambs. The Bishops also came in first in the three-lamb pen, 81 to 90 lbs. class. Shayrina placed third in the new crop milk lamb class, with Kayla Bishop coming in fourth place and Kabrina Bishop coming in fifth. Shayrina Farms also came in first in the market lamb, purebred, grade or crossbred wether or ewe class 51 to 80 lbs., fourth in the 81 to 90 lbs. class, first, sixth and seventh in the 91 to 100 lbs. class, second in the 101 to 110 lbs. class, first in the texel wether lamb class and first in the champion market lamb class. Greg and Marie Blake of Suncrest Farms, RR1 Listowel came out of the fair boasting the Galloway Reserve Grand Champion Bull. Suncrest Farms also placed first and third in the minimum three months of age bull calf class, second in the junior champion bull and reserve class, second in a bull yearling class, second in the 2006 bull class, second in the senior champion bull and reserve class, second in the grand champion bull and reserve class, fourth and fifth in the 2008 three-month-old female calf class, first in the 2007 female heifer class and fourth in the early 2007 female heifer class. The Blakes also came in second in the 2006 female class and second in the pre-2006 female class and also came in fourth in the senior showmanship class for 18 to 21 years and came in first in the premier breeder award class. Clayton Salter, also of RR1 Listowel came in fourth and seventh in the junior showmanship class for 10 to 17 years, second in the senior showmanship class and third in the progeny of dam class. Local winners at the 2008 Queen’s Guineas show were Dan Shapton, who was the champion in the black and white steer class with a hip height between 52 and 55 inches. Travis MacPherson placed fourth in the class. Tyler MacPherson placed fourth in the all-colour heifer class, Cole MacPherson placed sixth in the black steer class with a hip height between 49 and 50 inches and Lana Shapton placed seventh in the black steer class with a hip height between 53 and 56 inches. Huron County placed fifth in the Go For The Gold competition. The team was comprised of Sophie Jefferson, Maisy Jefferson, Ellen Jefferson, Kristina Drennan and their coach, May Ellen Foran.
