BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Nov. 30 were Barb andTerry Richmond. Ushering wereBrenda and Lori Brooks, TerryRichmond and Rob Mason.Margaret Kai was organist. Rev. Gary Clark welcomedeveryone to church on the FirstSunday of Advent. Deb, Jon andQuinton lit the Advent candle ofhope. The congregation and the
choir sang the first verse of Hope is
a Star while one of the Sunday
school members Rory Bromley,
carried the star to the front of the
church.
The gospel lesson was Isaiah 2: 1-
5.
The children were invited to the
front of the church. Rev. Clark had
three kinds of flashlights in his
hands. One was a little light with a
flasher on it, one was to be worn on
the head and one was a lantern type.
He asked the children holding the
lights to shine them in one spot. This
made a bigger light but would not be
seen by the whole world, he said.
Isaiah said the light shining within
one’s self could be seen.
The hymn, O Come, O Come
Emmanuel was sung with the
children joining in the chorus.
Following a prayer the children went
downstairs for their time of worship
and fellowship.
The second gospel reading, read
by Brenda Brooks, was Luke 1: 68-
79.
Rev. Clark’s message to the adults
was, The World is Waiting and So
Are We.
Jesus shows people how to lift up
to God. The candle of hope is one
way. Uniforms for the pen pals ofthe Sunday School are being givenso they will be able to go to school. In Uganda if you do not have auniform you can’t go to school. Thecongregation is also helping provideBikes for Humanity. Jesus had Hope because He waschanging the world. We must haveHope so our world will have peace,
said Rev. Clark.
The second hymn, Come Thou
Long Expected Jesus was sung.
BLYTH SENIORS’
CHRISTMAS DINNER
On Wednesday, Nov. 26, the Blyth
Legion Ladies Auxiliary plus
helpers, catered to a wonderful
traditional Christmas dinner – turkey
and all the trimmings. Christmas
pudding or pie completed the meal.
Forty-eight people from Blyth and
vicinity enjoyed the food and
fellowship. Shirley Nicholson,
president welcomed everyone.
Happy birthday was sung for those
with November birthdays – Hebo
and Margaret Siertsema and Rev.
Gary Clark, the guest speaker. Edgar
and Rilke Daer’s wedding
anniversary was noted too.
Rev. Clark, the new minister at the
United Church, spoke briefly about
the history of carols. He got
everyone involved with a
challenging Christmas carol quiz.
Lots of laughter and even some
singing was heard as groups worked
on the solutions. Once they were
known, Gary took up his guitar and
led in the singing of those carols.
Vera Hesselwood presented Gary
with a poinsettia.
The auxiliary and a wee helperdistributed a gift to each person. This too is a tradition of thisgathering that the group appreciates. The meeting concluded withreadings by Lawrence Plaetzer andShirley Nicholson. Shirley toldabout a class that had been asked tolist the seven modern wonders of theworld. Most children listed amazing
buildings around the world. One
little girl was slow to hand in her
paper because, she said, she could
think of so many, she didn’t know
which seven to pick. When
encouraged she listed what she had
written: “I think the Seven Wonders
of the World are: to touch, to taste, to
see, to hear, to feel, to laugh, to love.
Shirley went on to say that
everyday ordinary things are truly
wondrous and what people need is a
gentle daily reminder that the most
precious things: family, faith, love,
good health and friends are in front
of them.
With that thought, she wished
everyone a Merry Christmas.
The positive atmosphere of the
season prevailed even when the
meeting ended as people continued
to visit with one another. A vote of
thanks is due to the people who
work so hard to make this event such
a success for the seniors of this
village each year.
The club will not meet in
December.
