Yvonne Kitchen, Yvonne
Dettweiler, Lena Seigers, Sarah
Kipfer and Anne Hemingway have
been travelling to Kitchener each
week to rehearse with the Menno
Singers. The 280-voice mass choir is
presenting Handel’s Messiah at a
concert with the K-W Symphony at
Centre in the Square Dec. 13.
The choir, comprised as well of
the Menno Youth Singers and other
vocalists from the outside
community, is under the direction of
Peter Nikiforuk, organist of
Kitchener’s St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church.
Kitchen said said she had seen an
advertisement calling for singers
and brought it to the attention of
others.
“It’s nicer that there’s a group of
us to travel.”
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at the Centre in
the Square box office.
A motion that will see energy
efficient upgrades funded in addition
to current municipal allocations was
approved by Huron East council at its
Nov. 18 meeting.
The upgrades will be awarded on
an individual basis, however, the two
main objectives are currently the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre and the Seaforth
and District Community Centre.
Treasurer Brad Knight says the two
centres are two of the municipality’s
largest power consumers and have
been assessed penalty charges for a
poor power factor that came out of a
recently-implemented process to
track energy-consumption.
The process tracks energy
consumption, as well as costs, and
includes monitoring of the effects of
the improvements.
As a result, Huron East contacted
the consultant who worked on the
Seaforth sewage pumping station, who produced a report for both of thecommunity centres.
The report states a payback to the
municipality on upgrades of just over
three years.
Councillor David Blaney, also the
project manager for the Centre for
Applied Renewable Energy, said he
would not be surprised to see a
payback come far sooner.
The report suggests the installation
of automatic capacitor banks, which
Knight says can be installed at both
locations rather simply.
Blaney describes the devices as
“big fuses,” which would level out
the hydro usage of both centres.
“This is proven technology,”
Blaney said. “It works. I wouldn’t be
surprised to see an even quicker
payback because the power factor is
such a killer on bills.”
The motion was carried and
potential upgrades will be discussed
during the next year’s budget
deliberations.

Challenge: Getting enough fibre to promote
a healthy digestive system and help control
blood sugar and cholesterol levels
Solution:High fibre foods are generally lower in fat and may also help with weight
control as they provide bulk to make you feel full. Women up to the age of 50
should aim for 25 grams of fibre per day. Check labels for foods containing more
than 4 grams of fibre per serving to help you boost your intake. Fibre-rich foods
include dried cooked beans and lentils, green peas, papayas, pears with skin,
mangoes, potatoes with skin, dried fruit, berries, nuts and seeds, whole grain
breads and cereals.
