I was sitting in my office enjoying
the solitude and the moments of
silence when the telephone rang.
After some conversation I related
that it was a nice quiet day and a
welcome respite.
How little we know what a mere
moment can bring. Life changes
very quickly and circumstances and
situations, which would not be to our
choosing, invade our lives without
invitation.
A mishap on a river in a foreign
country has the ability to suspend
time and bring in its wake a sense of
foreboding and helplessness. To dosomething, to make it better, this isthe instinct of the survivalist but
when there is nothing that can be
done we can be left with a heavy
heart and a barely restrained sense of
panic.
How does God fit when times like
these intrude upon our lives? I don’t
know about you but I want what I
want and I want a good outcome to
the unexpected in my life. I want
some smooth sailing and calm
waters. I want God to make it all
better.
But we all know that life isn’t like
that, right? Tragedy has no bias. Pain
is not selective. Accidents are not
persnickety. Yet, at these times, when we arefaced with a sense of helplessness, if
we are willing to be still, it is
amazing how God fits. Not the way
we might hope, not the way we
might think, but the way that He
purposes to reveal Himself in our
lives. When life is rough, faith in
Christ can sustain us. When the very
act of living seems overwhelming,
faith in Christ can give us the
strength to carry on.
In the particular situation that was
faced by a family in our church this
week, the outcome has been jubilant
because an accident did not succeed
in robbing them of a loved one. The
presence of fear, the sense of panic, the sleeplessness and thehelplessness were all present but
what was evidenced was a faith
placed in Christ, a Christ who was
able to keep them no matter what
transpired.
God showed that He was an ever
present help in times of trouble but
He also showed that if we would
have eyes to see, we can even see
Him by faith in situations that are
beyond our control.
I guess this is a faith lesson …
learning to trust, like the Patriarch
Job, “yet though He slay me, still
will I trust Him” and as the Apostle
John writes, “This is the victory that
overcomes the world, even our faith.
Who is it that overcomes the world?
Only he who believes that Jesus is
the Son of God.”

The November meeting of the
Melville Guild and Women’s
Missionary Society was held in the
church parlour on Tuesday evening,
Nov. 18 with nine members and two
guests present.
Mary Douma opened the meeting
with the call to worship and the
hymn, Let There Be Peace On Earth
was sung. In Flanders Field was read
by all and Dona Knight led in prayer.
The scripture, Psalm 46 was read
by all.
Mary Douma gave an interesting
presentation and showed pictures of
the trip to France, Belgium and
Holland she and her husband
Maurice took to visit Vimy Ridge,
Dieppe, and Juno Beach
and the cemeteries. The purpose of
their trip was to honour the fallen
soldiers of Huron County.
While there they took part in a
memorial service at Menin
Gate and Mrs. Douma laid a
wreath given to her by the Brussels
Legion.
Mrs. Douma led in prayer to close
this part of the meeting.
Mary Carr presided over the
business. She read a poem
Remembrance Day and the minutes
of the October meeting were read
and approved. Jean Bewley gave the
treasurer’s report.
Lunch was planned for the Huron-
Perth Presbytery meeting to be held
in the church on Wednesday, Nov.
26.
The Christmas meeting will be
held at the home of Jeanne Kirkby.
The roll call was answered with
everyone telling someone they knew
who was in the war.
Lunch was served by Dona Knight
and Mary Douma.
