Home My WebLink AboutThe Citizen, 2008-11-20, Page 22By Jo-Ann McDonaldRemembrance Day was a full dayat the Brussels Legion Branch.There was a good crowd inattendance at the Legion for the service and also for the church service at Duff’s United Church Walton. There were nearly 80 at the Branch for the soup and sandwich lunch. Helpers for the lunch were Sandra Josling, Jean Bridge, Anne Pelletier and Mabel Glanville. There were over 25 members at the service at Huronlea conducted by Padre Sandra Yule. Residents commented on how nice the service was. Later in the evening, the Brussels Cadet Corps met for its regular meeting. To mark Remembrance Day, they had special guests for their meeting. Comrades Ross Bennett, Cecil Moore, Bush Whittard, Glenn Bridge and President Jo-Ann McDonald all spoke to the Cadets about a variety of things. Some spoke on their days when they enlisted and went to basic training. Some spoke on their time while serving on a naval ship andwhile on duty overseas. Comments were made on howthere were enjoyable times but alsohard work, as well as the fact that they lost friends during the war. Questions by the Cadets were answered and it was a positive experience for all attending. The History Channel broadcasted the series Finding The Fallen last week. It was the segment that featured a young man who had lived in Brussels for a few years, Will Maybury. He had come to Canada from England as part of the orphan group called the Bernardo children. Researchers digging in the trenches of France found artifacts that pointed to which regiment or group would have been serving and fighting there, and came up with the officer in charge, being Will Maybury. Researchers sifted through record after record, and found that he had enlisted in the Canadian army to serve in the First World War. Clips found from the old Brussels Post were shown and reported his death. The film crew had been in Brussels in the spring and footagefrom filming at the Legion and theBrussels United Church as well asdowntown Brussels was shown nearthe end of the program. A post card that was in the Legion’s procession, was taken by the researcher and was found to have a handwritten message from Will to his sister covered over on the back of the card. They had it carefully removed to uncover the message. The card has since been returned to the Legion and the history book. Comrade Glenn Bridge made a brief appearance during the Legion section and Betty Watson Graber made an appearance during the filming of the Brussels United Church window segment that has Will Maybury’s name inscribed on it. It was an amazing show and I hope a lot of folks were able to see it. Some members of the Legion taped it, so if interested, contact the Legion to borrow the tape. The Thursday night darts had 12 players. The first-place team was Sharon Robbins, John Harrison and Catrina Josling. The second-placeteam was Bill Robb, Sandra Joslingand Roger McHardy.The high shot of the night was byGord Jacklin shooting 115. Darts are every Thursday night at 8 p.m. The Friday night supper of meatloaf was enjoyed by a great crowd. Thanks to Heather Dauphin for preparing it. This week is meatballs and rice. Comrade Clarence Bishop is home from hospital and we hope for his continued improvement. The Saturday afternoon euchre saw only eight tables of players. The first-place team was Joyce Hodgins and Norma Strong with 85 points. Second place went to John and Iola Subject with 70 points and third place was Marie and Rita Flynn with 66 points.The low prize of the day went to Vera Lindner and Vera Ahrens. The lone hand prizes went to Ed Stewart and Helen Dobson. Congratulations to four Comrades who participated in Zone darts in Seaforth on Saturday. The lucky foursome of Bob Richardson, JohnHarrison, Norm Dobson and HarrySmith were the first-place team ofthe day. They will advance toDistrict play in the spring. Congratulations to Comrade Sandra Josling who is our second early-bird membership winner for her 2009 dues. We are down to the last two weeks to be an early bird, so get in soon to receive the discount price for next year’s dues by Nov. 30. Comrade Gordon Stiles was in Brussels on the weekend. He has been under the weather for awhile and President Jo-Ann went to see him and present his 35-year membership pin to him. Congrats to Comrade Stiles. Happy birthday to Comrade Mike Dauphin who celebrated his 30th birthday at the Branch on Saturday evening. Family and friends joined him for the evening of music, darts and fun.
