It has been a long time coming, but
the Toll family has brought home
Royal red.
SBH Flashy Dancer, a six-year-old
Clydesdale owned by Vaughn and
Marlene Toll, won first prize brood
mare at the Royal Agricultural Winter
Fair in Toronto on Nov. 9, then
captured the prize for Senior
Champion.
“Then we showed against the
juniors and she took Grand
Champion,” said Vaughn. “I’ve been
going to the Royal for 50 years and
this is the first time we got that red
ribbon. We’ve come close but never
won.”
The Tolls also had the first-placed
junior filly with Toll-Gate Ann.“We
took two and had two winners,” said
Toll.
Raising award-winning Clydesdales
has been a Toll family tradition for
decades, beginning with his late father
Aubrey. The elder Toll used
Clydesdales on his farmland and
began showing them in the late 1950s.
County councillors voted at the
Nov. 5 meeting to compensate South
Huron $9,000 for the use of Aiport
Line and Parr Line during the 2008
Credition bridge repairs.
The detour would be for eight
weeks this summer between County
Roads 10 and 5. The compensation
would consist of line painting on the
detour road and sidewalk
improvements in the town of
Crediton.
Councillor Bernie MacLellan of
Huron East questioned the price tag.
“I’m surprised to see a value
attached. I have no problem with
compensation. We usually bring
things back up to standard, but I just
question why there’s a dollar figure
on this.”
Acting director of public works
Dave Laurie said in discussions with
lower tiers of the county they had
tried to reach a mutually beneficial
solution.
He added that Crediton has been
inconvenieced for two years with
construction and now there will be
another.
“In this case the dollar value
matches the improvements.”

Well done
While they’ve had winners at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair the Toll family of Blyth have
never brought home a red ribbon, before. Until now. Prize-winning Clydesdale SBH Flashy
Dancer put on an excellent show capturing three prizes, including Grand Champion. From
