Brussels Majestic Women’s Institute meeting of Nov. 12 was held at the Brussels Library with 12 members, 12 guests from Walton WI, and four community guests including two speakers. Kari Bell spoke on her experience as the Fall Fair Ambassador and updated everyone on what she is doing this year. She also thanked the Institute for its ongoing support of the ambassador competition. The other speaker was Heather Armstrong from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She spoke on prevention of heart attack and stroke. She said get plenty of sleep, exercise, good food, and don’t smoke. Get up and move 45 minutes a day, reduce stress by reading, walking, hobbies, only sweat the big stuff, have a positive attitude and only ask questions that give you good answers. In the past year there have been 2,800 automated external defibrillators placed in Ontario at a cost of approximately $4,000 each including training. The chance of survival is 25 per cent higher with the AED. She also reminded that the Foundation is always looking for volunteers. If interested give them a call. Regular business was also conducted. A donation will be sent to the Children’s Health Foundation of London and also to the Huron County Children’s Aid Christmas drive. A reminder about the Huronlea craft sale for Dec. 6 was given. Contact Kathy Bridge. The next meeting is the Christmas lunch in Walton Dec. 10 at 11:30 a.m. Anyone wishing to attend a meeting can contact Bev Craddock, public relations officer, 519-887- 9879. (Vicky Bremner photo) The Walton Women’s Institute were the guests of the Brussels Women’s Institute for their meeting on Wednesday afternoon. As part of their ROSE (Rural Ontario Sharing Education) program of education in the community, they invited Walton as well as many of the local ladies to attend. The topic of the day and the special guest speaker was Heather Armstrong from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She had an interesting talk for all to enjoy. In hospital at this time is Doris Foster in Wingham and Maxine Marks in Seaforth. We wish them both improved health. Our condolences are expressed to the family of the late Barb Stiles Knight Rumball on her passing. Deepest sympathy to her daughters Patty and Judy and their families. The funeral was held on Saturday in Brussels. Congratulations to June Williamson and Ross Veitch on their marriage on Saturday in Listowel. Pam Hackwell spent a couple of days home with Howard and Audrey Hackwell. It’s nice to get out of the big city for the quieter life of the country. Pat Dalton and Carol Rennick spent the weekend in Niagara Falls.Don reports that if they spent time atthe casino, and had any bigwinnings, it will be a well-keptsecret.The Walton Hall was the place forOne Stop Shopping on Fridayevening. There were nearly 10 homeparty vendors set up to display theirwares to help get people’s Christmas shopping started. There were quite a few drop in and browse the displays and enter their names for the door prize. Lucky winner was Heidi McClure. The event was organized by Tracey McKee who reports it was a nice success. The Walton Hall was also the spot for the celebration of Fred and Heidi McClure’s 25th anniversary party. There were nearly 60 family and friends gathered for the evening. Family albums and pictures and even Heidi’s wedding dress were displayed. Most of the wedding party were able to attend, but unfortunately the nasty weather kept two of them from making it to Walton. Heidi’s mom and dad, John and Hannah Nater, were able to attend from Mitchell and her brother Bill had the honour of introducing everyone and saying a few words to all. Fred and Heidi have three children Darrell, Jennifer and Adam. It was a lovely evening with lots of snacks, lunch and dancing. Congrats to the happy couple. A shock to the community was the sudden passing of Clarence Flood. Our sympathies are extended to the Flood family on their loss. Clarence worked for the railroad and lived in or near Walton all his life. By Jasmin Roth On the wet day of Saturday, Nov. 15 the 4-H Christmas Crew met at the Cranbrook Hall to eat treats, decorate the hall for Christmas and make chocolate turtles. First they planned on what they would do for their float being entered into the Brussels Parade on Nov. 29. The theme for the parade is Family and Fun so members had to think of what they could include to the float to make it fit that. They are going to collect non- perishable food items to donate to the food bank along the route. They decorated the Christmas tree with lights and bulbs. Next they made turtles with pecans, caramel and lots of chocolate. They melted the chocolate, then the caramel onto the pecans. They spooned the chocolate onto the sticky globs of caramel, then left them to harden. At home all members made their own favourite Christmas treat and brought that to the meeting along with the recipe. After all the hard work they got to gobble down tasty treats. Some of these were confetti squares, reindeer cookies, ginger crinkles, chocolate chip cookies, nacho dip and trail mix. The last meeting will be held Nov. 29 when they will be decorating the float.
