The Brussels Atom Local League
won its first game this past weekend.
They were in Listowel for a late
Sunday morning ice time.
The play was intense as both
teams moved the puck up and down
the ice. All the forwards and defence
were kept to their best.
It was 1-0 for Brussels at the end
of the first. This goal was netted by
Kiaran Jared, assisted by Dean
Scarrow.
In the second period, Kailey
Wheeler scored her first of the
season after a rebound went
astray.
The third period saw Wheeler net
her second after handling the puck
from the red line all the way down
and into the net. Near the end of the
third, Scarrow chased a Listowel
player from the red line to just in
front of Brussels’ net, stopping the
player from making his shot.
Brussels skated off with a 3-1 win.
This team plays on Saturday at 1
p.m. at the minor hockey days.
The Brussels Atom Reps played
two games this past week.
Last Wednesday, they faced off
against Zurich at home. It was a nail
biter as the puck, several times, went
in front of both the goalies from left
to right, right to left, not going over
that goal line.
Logan Kellington scored the first
goal to take the lead. Wyatt Machan
netted the second goal, assisted by
Austin Johnston and Nic Zwep.
Delayna Smith scored, unassisted,
after being chased by a pair of
Zurich players for half the ice.
Machan netted his second of the
night off the Zurich goalie’s pads.
This one was assisted by Sean
Mitchell.
The fifth goal was scored by
Kellington with an assist from
Kiaran Jared. Kellington then made
it a hattrick for the night with a
quick assist from Smith.
Shots on the Zurich net reached
25.
The defence was kept busy trying
to stop plays from reaching the net.
Jared, Dylan McNeil, Sean Mitchell
and Connor Bridge should be
commented for their defensive
moves. Goalie Derrick Waechter
was kept busy making 28 saves.
Brussels lost 7-5.
They travelled to Howick on
Saturday.
Zwep lit the board near the end of
the first period.
Howick tied it up. Then
Kellington scored, assisted by
Johnston and Machan to make it 2-1.
Howick tied it again.
Brussels came ahead 3-2 with a
goal by Smith.
Howick tied it at 3-3 at the end of
the second.
Kellington made it 4-3 with an
assist from Smith, then netted his
hattrick from a rebound shot of
Machan’s.
Howick made it 5-4. Brussels kept
firing and so did Howick but
Brussels came away with the 5-4
win. It was quick action on the ice
throughout the game.
Brussels took 37 shots on net and
Waechter made 15 saves. This team
plays Saturday at 2 p.m. for the
Brussels Minor Hockey Days. They
will face Goderich.
The Brussels Novices had a tough
game against Zurich.
Brussels came on strong in the
first period scoring two goals, both
by Noah Terpstra.
In the second period Terpstra
scored again, but Zurich cancelled
it.
In the third Brussels added one
more by Cameron Gibson.
Zurich ended the game with
another.
Jarron Thompson played very
strong in net. The final score was 4-
2. The Novices are looking forward
to Hockey Days in Brussels Nov.

Midget Reps down Wallace
The Blyth-Brussels PeeWee girls
are still undefeated after six games,
including three games in as many
days over the weekend from Nov. 14
- 16.
The team had a tough match up in
Goderich on Friday night. Lexi
Smith got the team going in the first
period with assists going to Delayna
Smith and Leanne Plunkett.
Goderich tied it up three minutes
into the second period.
Goderich scored two in the first
half of the third to take the 3-1 lead.
The girls were determined to
finish the game strong and Jordyn
Sholdice scored with three minutes
to go. Assists went to Ashley
Higgins and Taylor Higgins. The
Smith sisters would combine for the
tying goal at the two-minute mark
with Delayna firing a shot into the
upper part of the net.
Goderich had a breakaway in the
dying seconds of the game and
managed to beat Lindsay Shiell, but
the buzzer had sounded just before
the puck entered the net. The final
score was 3-3.
The team travelled to Kincardine
on Saturday afternoon to play the
house league team. The girls
overpowered their opponents and
returned home with a 9-0 victory.
The weekend was closed out with
a game against Mildmay at the
Brussels arena, last Sunday
afternoon. The first period was fast-
paced with many chances to score,
but neither team was able to get on
the board.
The visitors managed to score
twice in the second period and took
that advantage into the third period.
After the intermission to clean the
ice, the Blyth-Brussels girls came
out flying to try and get on the
board. They hit the crossbar twice
and the post once and still could not
get a goal. Finally with seven
minutes to go, Ashley Higgins lifted
the puck past the Mildmay
goaltender, with assists going to
Lexi and Delayna Smith.
Mildmay iced the puck with a
minute to go in the game. That
provided the chance to pull the
goaltender and have an extra
attacker. With 34 seconds to go in
the game Kaitlyn Michie set up Lexi
Smith for the equalizing goal. The
final score was 2-2.
