This past weekend the Dogs travelled to Lucan where they played in a tournament with seven other teams. Game one was Friday, Nov. 14 against Burford. The Dogs and Burford were both very strong with end-to-end play. Although the Dogs were not able to bulge the twine, goalie Dalton Carey prevented Burford from scoring either. Game two was Saturday, Nov. 15 against Mount Brydges. Mount Brydges took an early lead in the first period. Blyth’s Spencer Stevenson took matters into his own hands and tied it up a few minutes later. Mount Brydges was keen and took the lead again before the period was over. The second period added another goal for Mt. Brydges. Mike VanWyk scored unassisted for Blyth, so at the end of the second period it was 3-2 for Mt. Brydges. Mt. Brydges scored early in the third period putting Blyth two goals behind. The Dogs were feeling the pressure and picked up the pace. Matt VanWyk passed to Dustin Pennington who slapped it in. Then Mike VanWyk assisted his brother Matt for another goal tying the game. With only 2:42 seconds left, Wyatt Carey and Dustin Pennington assisted captain Spencer Stevenson score the winning goal. The final score 5-4 was for Blyth. Game three was Sunday, Nov. 16 against Lucan. The first period was an end-to-end battle with neither team getting on the scoreboard. The second period proved to be a crowd pleaser with five goals scored in total, two for Lucan and three for Blyth. Mike VanWyk had an unassisted goal. Stevenson scored back-to-back goals with assists going to Braydon Whitfield and Pennington. Blyth’s Ryan Nesbitt bulged the twine halfway through the third to secure the Dog’s 4-2 victory. In the semi-final the squad played Seaforth. This was the first time that Blyth scored first in the tournament. Stevenson scored an unassisted goal eight minutes into the first period. Seaforth tied the game up in the second but not for long. Mike VanWyk assisted Arden Coultes to put Blyth in front. The third period belonged to the Dogs. Mike VanWyk assisted Nesbitt’s goal. Then Stevenson buried another one to end the game 4-1. The final was against Port Stanley. It had been a long day with a lot of ice time for the Dogs. They had lots of shots on net but could not seem to get past Port Stanley’s keeper. The final score was 5-0 for Port Stanley. Goalie Dalton Carey played well. Stevenson was awarded team MVP by the Port Stanley fans. On Nov. 12 Milverton travelled to Blyth to take on the PeeWees. The first period was a barrage of goals in the Milverton net. Just 22 seconds into the first period Stevenson scored unassisted. A couple of minutes later Mike VanWyk gave the puck to Pennington who passed to Trystan Weber for the goal. Stevenson then scored two back-to-back goals with assists from Matt VanWyk and and Mike VanWyk. Pennington and Matt VanWyk then set the stage for Mike VanWyk to score his first goal of the game. Stevenson scored yet another goal assisted by Wyatt Carey. Before the end of the period Stevenson scored his fifth goal of the game with help from Connor Rodger and Whitfield. Milverton changed up their goaltending in the second period challenging the Dogs’ skills. The second period ended with the score remaining 7-0. The third period was a hard-hitting battle. Blyth’s goalie, Dalton Carey, managed to earn his fourth shutout while his offence scored two more goals. Matt VanWyk had an assist on Coultes’s goal while Stevenson assisted Pennington’s goal. It was a physical game all around with Milverton having two penalties and Blyth’s VanWyk twins each taking a turn in the box. At the final buzzer, the Dogs came out victorious again with a solid 9-0 win. Fresh from the season and home opener victory the Blyth Atom Local League players were keen to hit the ice again and welcomed the challenge from Milverton. The first period was a fast-paced affair that ended scoreless. Owen Andrews took a tripping penalty in the first period but stellar defensive play held the opponents back. Early in the second Blyth found themselves killing another powerplay after Jeremy Wilts took a tripping penalty. Franklin Marshall made some key saves during both penalties to keep Blyth in the game. Halfway into the second period Milverton peppered a few shots at the goalie and stuffed in a rebound. After Blyth put the pressure on for several minutes, Milverton regained possession of the puck and sent a rocket past Franklin to go ahead 2-0. Halfway through the third Andrews grabbed a pass from Brett Glousher and sent a crisp pass right on the tape of Colton Rodger in front of the net. Wasting no time he snapped a quick shot past the goalie to reduce the deficit. The next shift saw Gavin Workman steal the puck from Milverton and rush down the left wing to send a pass to Patrick Franken who sent a screamer off the post. It bounced just past Cam Gauthier who was on the doorstep looking for a rebound. Later with the puck loose in the corner Rodger raced towards it and slipped a neat pass to Andrews just to the side of the net. Seeing no opportunity to score himself, Andrews shovelled the puck into the slot to a waiting Glousher. Making no mistake, he fired the loose puck into the back of the net to even the score. The remainder of the game was as exciting as the opening periods. The defence kept the opposition under control in the Blyth zone and sent shots at the net from the point in their zone. The forwards cleared the puck effectively from the zone and scared their goalie several times without success. The tie held until the buzzer. Blyth Bantam boys broomball team travelled to Mildmay on Nov. 12. The first period saw lots of action from both teams, but neither was able to get the ball into the net. Blyth’s goalkeeper Bryce Glousher saw a lot of shots on net and made some great saves to help keep his team in the game. In the second period, Blyth’s Derek deBoer scored with an assist from Hunter Broda and Alex Sanders. It didn’t take Mildmay long to tie up the game with a nice shot to the top shelf of the net. Blyth’s Tyler O’Rourke made a great effort to stop the ball and had it trapped but Mildmay got the ball loose and flipped it over the downed defence into the net before the keeper could find it. DeBoer and Broda set up the next goal and Sanders sent the ball into the net to tie up the game. Blyth’s defence was a little sloppy and two more goals went into the net. Mildmay also scored on a breakaway to widen their lead. Blyth didn’t give up and kept the pressure on. Broda scored the next goal with an assist from deBoer. Sanders scored his second goal of the night and deBoer got the assist. The final score was 5-4 for Mildmay. Blyth Atom Local League claws their way to a tie The shorthanded Blyth Novice Rep team couldn’t keep up with the Minto squad in recent hockey action. The Novices team met a tough team Nov. 15 on home ice. Blyth had only eight skaters and a goalie. The players tried to mount a strong game, however they couldn’t compete against a full and talented Minto team. Blyth goalie Jake Gulutzen stopped several shots fired at him. Blyth skaters had trouble getting the puck out of their end at times and Minto made sure they capitalized on the several opportunities they had.
