HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2008-11-13, Page 20You’ve got the cozy corner, thecup of herbal tea. Now what to read?A Brussels woman has published abook of introspective and
inspirational messages meant for
quiet moments and thoughtful times.
One Prayer was inspired by
personal thoughts on life and living,
says its author Colleen Smith
Ranney. A published poet who grew
up in the area, Ranney said writing
has always been a passion for her,
therapy to “save my sanity”, she
smiles.
Having published two books of
poetry, Entangled Within the Nature
of Things and Ancient Mirrored
Dreams, the evolution of One Prayer
came about in a surprising, though
thoroughly modern way. “I actually
started a group on Facebook and sent
a message every morning. Whatever
I went through the day before, I
wrote about it the next morning.”
Ranney said feedback was
encouraging but also brought a sense
of connection. “It was strange
because so many people began to
say that the were feeling the same
way. It was gratifying.”
The messages speak to a variety of
things, from experiences to
realizations. “Like those moments
when you see your child go off with
someone in a car for the first time
and realize they are growing up.”
The 35-year-old received support
and assistance from her partner Ryan
Ranney, a graphic artist, editor and
musician, who did the cover design
for the book. He describes One
Prayer as something that is “topical
to humanity, not in a political sense, but relative to being alive. It’s aboutliving days and nights.”Despite the title, both agree thatthe book is not Christian-based but spiritual in its content. “I draw frommany inspirations,” said Ranney.
