Last week around Walton, most
people were either hunting or
preparing for the Duff’s United
Church annual turkey supper.
The supper was held at the BMG
Community Centre. There was a
fantastic crowd as usual, with over
700 hungry folks.
It takes a lot of people and a lot of
time to prepare for the meal.
Tuesday was prep day at the church,
peeling, chopping, washing, stuffing,
etc. Tuesday evening was out to the
community centre to set up the
tables, the kitchen, the takeout area, the carving centre and smorg tables. The day of the supper arrived andturkeys were cooking, pies werebaking and yes, there was more stuffto be taken to the arena from thechurch. Help started arriving atnoon. There were jobs for everyone, and some moved from job to job.The time to serve arrived before
we knew it, 2 1/2 hours had flown by
and the dinner was over.
But, not the work. There
wascleanup, lots and lots of clean
up.
The auditorium and kitchen were
returned to normal state.
Finally by 9:45 p.m. the last of the
ladies were heading to Walton
church to unload. It’s a big job done
for another year that raises funds for
Duff’s United Church. The supper
committee does a wonderful job and
especially, convenor Helen Craig.
The support from the men in the
congregation is really appreciated.
Hunting last week went really wellfor most. The weather certainly wasgreat with just Monday being a littleon the damp side.Monday was also the big day forthe group that Rick and ScottMcDonald and Chris and DevinBlake hunt in. They managed to get14 deer that day alone. The weeksaw them get 21 deer, so I guess
venison will be on the dinner menu
for a while.
Celebrating her birthday seemed
to go on and on for Mabel Willis last
week. Turning 75, does only happen
once, so you might as well party.
Mabel’s daughters, Sharon, Dianne
and Donna, treated her to dinner at
JR’s on the day of her birthday. But
while waiting for dinner, who should
walk in, but Mabel’s son Wayne, all
the way from Alberta to surprise his
mother. You might think that would
be the end of the surprises, but no.
Thinking she was heading to
Sharon’s home for dinner on Sunday
with the family, Mabel was surprised
to arrive at the Kinburn Hall to be
welcomed by her many McWhirter
family relatives. They had a great
afternoon together and a birthday
Mabel will never forget.
Celebrating their 30th wedding
anniversary were Jack and Sylvia
Nonkes. They were joined by sons
Peter, Aaron and families and
daughter Angela along with mom
and dad, Abe and Francis
Vanderveen at the Stone Crock in St.
Jacobs for a family dinner.
Congratulations to Jake and Rene
Hulzebos on celebrating their 55th
wedding anniversary. They had a
few of their friends in for coffee on
their special day.
Spending a special day together
were five women, who are related.
This has been a tradition for a while.
Fanny Somers and Jean Bewley
were joined by Edith Vipond and
Janet Scott. They travelled to Elmira
to join Gertrude Collins, who is over
90, for a lovely lunch and visit. They
get together every year to keep in
touch and enjoy each other’s
company.
Speedy recovery wishes go out to
Don Scrimgeour who had surgery on
his foot. Not to be kept down, he was
back in the store only four days later
on a scooter.
Celebrating Christmas early was
Kathleen Williamson’s family. They
gathered at the home of Tom and
Joyce Williamson and family, along
with Shirley Skinner and family.
Spending the weekend with my
girls, LeeAnn and Kelly, we were off
to Frankenmuth, Michigan and Birch
Run. It was the first time we have
been there and it was great. We wentto Bronner’s Christmas store, thelargest in the world and it was lovely. You wouldn’t believe how manydifferent Christmas decorationsthere are. We also went to Birch Runand spent the day shopping. We ran into the Anderson womenwho go on a yearly girls weekendover there and I ran into a cousin of
mine as well.
We had a great weekend.
The Walton Hall had a roast beef
dinner on Sunday evening with over
80 enjoying the meal. Hopefully this
will finish off the fundraising for the
well and the Hall can proceed with
its next project.
Celebrating birthdays last week
were Rita Bowers, Terry Sloan, Jane
Zwep, Elva D. Brown, Jeanne
Kirkby, Johnathan Williamson,
Brian Pryce, Danielle Ducharme,
and Katie Roth.
Yummy
Marjory Humphries was on pie duty last week at Duff’s
United Church’s annual turkey supper at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre. Dozens of workers
were busy setting up tables, carving turkeys, preparing
stuffing or ensuring no one made an early attempt at any
pie. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
The Butterflies had a busy month
learning all about fall, Thanksgiving
and Halloween.
They enjoyed making turkeys and
colouring pumpkins.
They also had fun talking about
their Halloween costumes.
The Butterflies look forward to
learning all about zoo animals in
November.
The month of October flew by and
the Stars class learned about the
letters E, F, G, H.
They had a week full of
Halloween activities, which ended
with a Halloween party on Oct. 31.
They enjoyed cleaning pumpkins,
carving and cooking pumpkin seeds.
They also participated in games,
crafts and indulging in some
Halloween sweets before they
ventured off to do their own trick or
treating.
The Acorns were busy learning
about the fall harvest and fire safety
at the beginning of October. They
carved jack-o-lanterns, baked
pumpkins seeds, and wrote in their
journals about their Halloween
costumes.
They celebrated Halloween by
dressing up their costumes and
having a celebration and scavenger
hunt outdoors.
