The Saugeen Maitland Bantam
AA girls had a strong showing this
past weekend in the Rochester Fire
and Ice Tournament.
In game one against the Princeton
Tiger Lilies, the girls came out ahead
5-2 with goals scored by Carly
Smith, Vanessa Armstrong, Nicole
Marriage, Brooklyn Irwin and
Hannah Davidson. Assists were by
Sara Gossell, and Caroline
McDowell with two each and
Marcie Landman.
The girls had a tough second game
against the hometown Rochester
Edge, suffering a 6-0 defeat. Chelsea
Houle had a strong game in relief in
net.
In game three against the Los
Angeles Selects, the Lightning
dominated the play and came
out ahead 3-1, on goals by
Gossell, McDowell and Davidson
with assists from Laura Irwin,
Kelly Gribbons, Davidson and
Armstrong.
Strong defensive play by Taylor
Gilkinson helped to secure the win
for the Lightning.
Given the 2-1 record in round-
robin play, the girls advanced to the
consolation finals against the Stoney
Creek Sabres.
These two equally-matched teams
had tied on two previous meetings
this year.
However, the Lightning was the
more determined team, and came out
with the 2-0 victory for the
consolation championship.
Goals were scored by Landman
and Davidson, with assists from
Shelsie Popp, Smith and Arm-
strong.
The strong defensive play of Kelly
Garrow, Georgia Ottewell, Abbey
Gibson, Smith, Popp and Gilkinson
helped to keep the Sabres off the
scoreboard.
Stephanie Sluys had the shutout
for the Lightning.
The Brussels PeeWee Reps had a
tough game against Teeswater last
Wednesday night. Refs Tyler Deitner
and Ken Higgins were kept busy
with their whistles. It was rough and
tumble game and both teams
accumulated several penalty
minutes.
There were 25 shots on the
Teeswater net, but only four made it
in. Scoring for Brussels were Wyatt
Ducharme with a hattrick and Lexi
Smith.
Assisting them were Smith,
Hayden, TenPas and Mitch
Kellington.
Goalie Matt McNichol made 31
great saves but it was an 11-4 loss
for Brussels.
Playing well on defence were
Reece McArter, Tim Waechter,
Colton Hastings and TenPas.
Brussels came out strong in their
game against Howick.
Ducharme scored two and earned
one assist. Josh Bridge, scored one
and Jordyn Sholdice scored one and
picked up three assists. Brock
McLean scored six and tallied two
assists.
TenPas had a hattrick and one
assist. Smith scored two and was
creditted with three assists. Logan
Kellington scored one and got two
assists.
McNichol earned a shutout.
Bantam girls win in Rochester
Brussels PeeWee Reps lose big
On Nov. 5, Clifford came to Blythto challenge the PeeWee Dogs onBlyth's ice. Dalton Carey got the shutout asBlyth's goaltender. The Dogs scored16 goals.The first period put three on the
board. Mike VanWyk started the
game off with an assist from Connor
Rodger. VanWyk then scored the
second goal of the game unassisted.
The last goal went to Rodger with an
assist by Dallas Coultes.
Blyth kept the timekeepers busy in
the second period with eight goals
and three penalties. Goals went to
both Mike and Matt VanWyk,
Trystan Weber and Rodger with two
each, Coultes and Dustin
Pennington. Assists were earned by
Wyatt Carey, Coultes, Pennington,
Curtis Raynard and Spencer
Stevenson each with two and Ryan
Nesbitt.
Stevenson, Raynard and Braydon
Whitfield sat out for two minutes
each in the second period for
interference, tripping and hooking
respectively.
The third period gave Blythanother five points. The first threeprovided a hattrick for Penningtonfollowed by Mike VanWyk andWyatt Carey adding their names tothe game sheet. Assists were awarded to
Stevenson for two, and one each for
Carey, Weber and Matt VanWyk.
Blyth Peewees next travelled at
Elma-Logan.
Blyth had a slow start allowing
Elma Logan to score the first two
goals of the game.
Then with just one second
remaining in the first period a pass
from Nesbitt to Pennington was put
in the net by Stevenson.
In the second period Elma Logan
scored the first goal to make it 3-1 in
their favour. But, only 39 seconds
later Mike VanWyk bulged twine
with help from brother Matt and
Coultes.
Elma Logan scored again just 10
seconds later.
This seemed to pump up the Dogs
as they went on to score five more
goals in the second period. Matt
VanWyk scored with assists frombrother Mike and Coultes.Stevenson slam-dunked another hereceived from Weber. Stevensonthen returned the favour by passingto Weber who shot it in. Penningtonalso got an assist for that goal. Wyatt
Carey passed to Matt VanWyk who
sent the puck to brother Mike for his
second goal of the game. The final
goal of period two was scored by
Wyatt Carey, unassisted.
In period three Elma Logan came
back to score their last goal of the
game.
But the Dogs were not done
biting. Coultes and Matt VanWyk
had back-to-back assists to Mike
VanWyk's next two goals. Mike
VanWyk went on to score his fifth
goal of the game unassisted. Matt
VanWyk then passed to brother
Mike who sent the puck to Weber.
Weber put another point on Blyth's
side of the scoreboard.
The final goal of the gamealso
went to Weber with a final tally of 13
for Blyth and five for Elma Logan.
Dalton Carey was in net for Blyth.
Competition
It was a scramble at the boards as the Blyth-Brussels
PeeWee girls and their opponents from Tiverton struggled
to gain control of the puck. The two teams were in action in
Blyth on Saturday. The locals posted a solid 9-2 victory.

In Lower Lakes Female Hockey
League action, the Saugeen
Maitland Lightning AA Midgets
fought a losing battle in the bronze
medal game of the Waterloo Ravens
Fall Challenge Tournament this
weekend.
They fell 2-1 to the host Waterloo
team with defenceman Shannon
Myles, Lion’s Head scoring the lone
marker.
They had entered the semi-finals
in first place, despite losing to
London 3-1 with Gina Murray,
Lucknow, getting the only goal.
The girls opened Friday with a 5-1
win against Stoney Creek with two
tallies coming from Tammy
Freiburger, Wingham, and singles
from Victoria Bertrand, Port Elgin,
Kate Wagner, Sauble Beach and Ona
Mezenberg, Owen Sound.
Saturday found the Lightning
winning against Guelph 3-0 with
Freiburger, Bertrand and Kathryn
Roy, Owen Sound, scoring and
Sarah McGall earning the shutout.
They tied Waterloo 1-1 with
Lindsey Ceaser, Owen Sound,
forcefully rushing the net for their
only goal in that game.
The girls will be next in action in
London on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1:30
p.m. and at home on Sunday, Nov.
16 playing the Stratford Aces at 1
p.m. in the Howick arena.
