Madill Secondary School in Wingham. My teacher is Mrs. Kellington. My co-op placement is at Brussels Auto Collision and Restoration. I work from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every day until the end of January. At this body shop they fix everything from dents and scratches to full restorations and paint jobs. During my time there I have learned many things like sanding and grinding. I have also learned how to pull out large dents using different tools and how to sandblast. I am working with Charlie Wick, the owner of the shop and Doug Bowers, an employee there. After I am finished high school I would like to open my own body shop and the skills I am learning definitely help me in this career. I enjoy working at my placement and I would recommend the Co-op program to any student. EVAN DUCHARME Plumbing and electrical trade I am a Grade 12 co-operative education student at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham. My co-op placement is at B&H Mechanical in Brussels where my supervisor is Verne Bridge and my co-worker is Scott Armstrong. They are both great teachers. I work full days trying to earn four credits toward my high school diploma and also learn the plumbing and electrical trades. Some day I hope to become licensed as a certified plumber and electrician. I believe this is a very promising career because someone will always need these two trades. I have found the co-op program a good change from going to school and I have got a good taste of what it is like to be a plumber and electrician. Throughout the day, I work with Verne and Scott on jobs and learn many things you could never be taught in classroom. My co-opplacement has been a veryeducational experience and it is avery interesting field of work.I believe I would like to pursuethis career after I graduate highschool. Mr. Walker, my co-op teacher is assisting me in getting signed up as an OYAP student (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program). I am sure it will be a very good experience. JAMIE LOSCH Construction business I am a co-op student at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham. I am presently doing a co-op placement at D & I Wattam Construction. My co- op supervisor is Chris Wattam. I have learned many interesting things like how to set grades, put in septic systems, and backhoeing. I have also been involved with clearing out trees and backfilling house foundations. I am able to operate some of the equipment and am becoming very good at knowing what to do. All the guys who work on thiscrew are great. They are easy to getalong with, but hard working. I prefer to work outdoors than dobookwork in the classroom. When Igraduate in June I have been offeredfull time work at Wattam’s. I plan to get my AZ licence and be able to work on any of the equipment they own. I look forward to my future at D&I Wattam. My co-op teacher is Mrs. Kellington. KRISTEN MCARTER In the classroom “Alright children, quiet reading time. That means NO talking. I’m a co-op student from F.E. Madill Secondary School. My co-op teacher is Mrs. Kellington. My co- op placement is at East Wawanosh Public School in Belgrave. I started my placement in mid- September and will be done at theend of January when the semester isover. I really enjoy working with thekids although it can get hectic attimes.I’m still thinking of becoming a massage therapist although a teaching assistant would be an option. I am finding my experience at the school to be fulfilling and enjoyable. I’m very welcomed by my co- workers and like doing little tasks for them so they can focus on the bigger things. I think I am making a difference. Love Dad, Mom, Kate, Shawn and Grandma. The Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board didn’t have to look too far to find the ideal candidate to replace outgoing director of education Larry Langan. After receiving eight applications from across Ontario and interviewing three prospective appointees, trustees opted to elevate current education superintendent Martha Dutrizac to the top job. Dutrizac’s appointment was unanimously approved at a special board meeting Wednesday, Oct. 15. “To me, it’s a bit of a bonus to be able to choose someone from your own staff, because you don’t have to bring them up to speed on the issues in the board,” commented Huron- Perth chair Bernard Murray in a recent interview. Murray explained that, following Langan’s announcement that he would retire effective Dec. 31, trustees held a series of “focus group” meetings with a wide range of employees. “The idea was to get some feedback as to the type of director they wanted.” Dutrizac will now take over a board which – by the time the transition occurs – will probably have signed new collective agreements with those labour groups. Her own post as education superintendent for elementary programming has already been advertised, and Murray predicted that trustees would know sometime this week if interviews will be necessary. Dutrizac has strong connections with top-level administrators in the provincial Ministry of Education, having participated in various curriculum development initiatives during her six years of service at Huron-Perth. Prior to coming here, she worked for the London and District Catholic school board. “She’s a very dedicated individual,” Murray said. “And she certainly has motivated staff and students to elevate their level of achievement.” “She will bring her strengths, and that’s why we hired her.” Michelle Cook Graduation Michelle has graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a degree in Bachelor of Business Administration Honours with Co-operative Option. Michelle is currently completing her Charter Accounting add-on courses and has accepted a full-time position with Ernst and Young in London starting January 2009.
