Bill, 212, “the Progressive Discipline and Student ConductBill,” requires that school boardsprovide some form of programming for students who are prevented from attending school for disciplinary reasons. In the Huron-Perth board, the number of students facing such sanctions is small enough that the money accompanying the provincial announcement could be used for other measures. So the teachers hired in the two schools – St. Anne’s in Clinton and St. Michael in Stratford – are also mandated to intervene before disciplinary issues progress to suspension or expulsion, and to work with students displaying chronic truancy. “We have teaching staff assigned to those purposes,” Parr reported. “This person works in collaboration with the school’s guidance department to achieve these goals.” Included in the Oct. 27 reportwere 2007-08 semester-by-semestersuspension and expulsion statistics for the two high schools. The number of students suspended per semester ranged between a low of 18 in the first semester at St. Mikes to a high of 32 in the second semester at St. Anne’s (although there is no indication how many were “long- term” suspensions). There were no expulsions from either school during 2007-08. Parr, however, advised against using those statistics to gauge the effectiveness of the board’s new approach. “We need to get into it for at least a couple more semesters before we can try to draw any conclusions from the numbers,” he said. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2008. PAGE 25. Friday, Oct. 24 was a special outdoor assembly for the teachers, staff and special guests at Grey Central Public School. Recently retired principal Rob Snell, returned to school at 11:25 a.m. to be honoured in an outdoor ceremony. Everyone gathered outside as Alicia Deitner, school council chair, spoke about the many great and wonderful things Mr. Snell did for Grey Central during his four years as principal at Grey. Mr. Snell worked diligently at promoting the environmental school grounds and at teaching students how to take care of their earth, said Deitner. In honour of his dedication to the students, staff and school grounds, a special king crimson maple tree was planted in the front yard. Beside the tree is a plaque with Mr. Snell’s name. Planted Friday, Oct. 24 students, staff and guests at Grey Central Public School in Ethel, honoured recently-retired principal Rob Snell, right by planting a tree on the school grounds.
