at: www.mcburneyfuneralhome.comMost people won’t be surprised to
learn the weekly cost of eating
healthy has increased again.
While that may not be surprising,
the actual increase may be. The
change was only a one per cent
increase from last year, which is
about a $1.46 per week for a family
of four.
According to this year’s Nutritious
Food Basket survey, it would cost
$138.57 per week for a family of
four to eat healthily. This family
includes a man and woman aged 25-
49, a boy aged 13-15, and a girl aged
seven to nine. Last year, the cost was
$137.11 per week.
Over the past nine years, there has
been a 23 per cent increase in food
costs in Huron County.
The Huron County Health Unit
conducts the Nutritious Food Basket
survey every year. Six grocery stores
located throughout Huron County
take part.
The survey consists of 66 food
items from Canada’s Food Guide
and is based on the average eating
patterns of Canadians. The food
items can be used to prepare a week
of nutritious meals.
Items in the survey include fruits
and vegetables, meat, fish, poultry,
eggs, dairy products, bread, and
cereal. Five per cent is added to the
weekly total to cover items used in
daily meal preparation. Items like
“junk” food, paper products, baby
food, personal hygiene or cleaning
products are not included in the
survey. Since these items are not
included in the survey, it is likely
that your grocery bill may be more
than what is reported here.
Public health nutritionist Cherie
Dolmage says the Nutritious Food
Basket is important because it gives
an idea about the cost of eating well
in Huron County. “The survey is
done each year so we can track the
changes in food costs. Community
agencies can use the results to
determine if current minimum wage
and social assistance rates can cover
basic needs, like a healthy diet.”
Dolmage says a family of four on
social assistance in Huron County
will struggle to pay rent, utilities,
and eat a healthy diet. To stretch the
money and pay the bills, food dollars
are often used to cover the cost of
basic needs. This means less
nutritious foods are eaten or meals
may be skipped.
The Huron County Health Unit
has programs to help offset the cost
of eating healthy. One of these
programs is the Good Food Box.
Boxes of local produce are available
to purchase once a month through
the Health Unit and at sites around
the county.

Food Basket or the Good Food Box,

Unit at 1-877-837-6143.
